Connecticut Sun closes deal to send Jonquel to New York Liberty
Multiple reports have indicated that the Connecticut Sun has reached a deal to send Jonquel Jones, former WNBA MVP, to New York Liberty.
The trade details are not yet finalized.
Jones, the 2021 league MVP, has spent her entire six-year career with the Sun and helped lead the franchise to the WNBA Finals twice— in 2019 and last season. The Connecticut Aces defeated Connecticut in four games last autumn.
According to Jones, Jones specifically requested that New York be traded to. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. According to reports, the Liberty want to create a title-contending team. They are currently looking for former UConn star Breanna Stewart.
Connecticut hired new head coach Stephanie White this offseason after head coach and general manager Curt Miller, who had been in charge since Jones’ rookie season in 2016, left the team for the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Sparks.
Jones is a 4-time All-Star. Her career average is 13.6 points/ 8.3 rebounds. She had a double-double in her 2021 MVP season (19.4 ppg and 11.2 boards per).
