AJ Pollock and the Seattle Mariners sign a 1-year contract

SEATTLE (AP) — Outfielder AJ Pollock and the Seattle Mariners finalized a one-year contract Thursday, setting up a potential platoon situation in left field for the upcoming season.

A potential position share will see Pollock, a right-handed hitter, paired with Jarred Kelenic, a left-handed hitter.

“AJ is a terrific fit for our roster,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dpoto said in a statement. “Among many quality traits, his high character and baseball IQ are tailor-made for our group, while his experiences in key roles for championship quality teams will no doubt provide value in our ongoing development.”

Pollock was with the Chicago White Sox last season, and he hit.245 with fourteen homers and 56 RBIs over 138 games. Pollock’s batting average against lefties was.286. He also has a career.285 OPS of.868 against lefties.

Pollock was an All-Star with Arizona in 2015. He also spent three seasons with Los Angeles Dodgers before moving from Arizona to Chicago. Pollock hit.297 with 21 runs two seasons ago with Los Angeles Dodgers. Pollock also has a lot of experience in the postseason, having appeared in 30 playoff games between 2019-21 with the Dodgers.

In recent seasons Pollock has mostly played left field, but he could play right field or be a designated hitter for the Mariners.
