Alabama basketball player is killed in a shooting near campus

According to authorities, a former University of Alabama basketball star was placed in prison Sunday night after being arrested in connection to a shootout near campus.

Darius Hairston Miles, 21 years old, of Washington, D.C. was one of two men who were arrested following a gunfire incident in vehicles near the Strip, Tuscaloosa’s campus and adjacent nightlife district, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

The office released a statement saying that he was being held on suspicion of murder. It stated that Jamea Jonae, 23 was the victim.

None of the other parties were associated with the institution. It was not clear if Miles retained private counsel in this case. A request for comment was not immediately received by the Tuscaloosa public defender’s Office.

Alabama Athletics said on Sunday that it extended deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones and that Miles had been removed from its basketball team.

Miles’ name was not listed on the institution’s online basketball roster as of Sunday night. According to the university, Miles has been “removed from our campus.”

According to the basketball program, Miles, a junior forward was ruled out of the remainder of the season because he had aggravated an injury preseason.

It was not clear whether Miles was no more a student, or if the institution could eject him without any process. The statement of the sheriff referred to Miles’ relationship with the university in the past tense.

The shooting took place in the area’s nightlife district on Sunday morning. Sheriff’s officials didn’t say which of the two suspects is alleged to have opened fire or whether they believe both did so.

According to the sheriff’s office, “It appears that the shooting occurred as a result of a minor argument between the victims/suspects after they met each other along the strip.”

The driver reported that a passenger had been shot and killed shortly before 2 AM.

Investigators were told by the driver that someone had opened fire on his vehicle near the Strip. The driver then fired back, possibly injuring another person in the opposite vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Violent Crimes Unit detectives located two suspects after speaking with witnesses and viewing security video, according to the office.

According to the office, one of the suspects was hurt in the shootout. It didn’t say which one nor if he was being hospitalized.

Michael Lynn Davis (20), also charged with capital murder was also identified.

The university stated that it was cooperating with this investigation.

According to the university’s statement, campus residents affected by the violence may reach out to counselors on campus, even during Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
