Blue Jays get first home dual win Thursday

Jan. 12—JAMESTOWN — Aden Braun has been on the sidelines at every one of the Blue Jay wrestling team’s matches this season.

Thursday night was a different kind of Thursday for the Jamestown High School senior.

Braun stated that there was much anticipation and build-up leading up to the match. It was my first time back to wrestling with the team, and I wanted to just focus on my mat work and other such things because that’s where I am most at my best. It was amazing to be back on the mat.

Braun’s first double back was a win in the Blue Jays’ favor.

Dickinson was defeated by the Jays 52-19, improving their overall record to 2-2 for the West Region. The Jays’ four-dual weekend began Thursday. On Friday, the Jays will take on Bismarck Century in Bismarck. Saturday will see road duals against Watford City and Williston.

Larry Eslick, JHS head wrestler coach, said that this was the start we needed. “This weekend will make or break a lot if the positioning for the state double tournament. It will kind of determine whether we go back or not but I told the kids that there was no pressure heading into tonight — we just told them to wrestle the match in front of them.

He said, “I think that was the case tonight.” “We wrestled loose, we were aggressive — it was just a great night.”

The Blue Jays had an overall record of 11 ranked wrestlers out of 14 weight classes in the final coaches’ wrestling poll. The Jays were ranked No. The Jays were ranked as the third team in the WDA and fourth in the state.

Jackson Walters 15-0 record made him the No.1 state wrestler. 1 wrestler at 182 pounds. Colton Mewes and Grady Anderson were ranked second in each weight class, while Braun, Pete Rasmussen and Dalton Darby were ranked third in the heavyweight, 126 and 138 divisions.

Darby and Rasmussen were both competing all season. Braun, however, was unable to compete due to a few nagging injuries suffered during the football seasons. Braun has been out of the Jays lineup for the past month.

Braun says it best:

“I’m back.”

Braun, the Jays’ starting 138-pounder was matched against Dickinson’s Cash Crimmons. The defending state champion at 138 pounds took an early lead of 11-3 and although he could easily have scored a pin, Eslick stated that the Jays’ goal was for Braun and Grady Anderson (the Jays’ 145-pounder) to stay there for six minutes.

Eslick stated that they wanted the wrestlers to have a full match for their mat time. Eslick said that not getting pins isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We wanted a good, full match to prepare for the weekend. We knew everything was under control. Although we weren’t going lose them, we wanted to keep them in control.

Braun made it through the first period. However, the refs indicated that the match was over halfway through the second period. Braun won the match by technical fall.

Braun stated, “I felt pretty good.” “The kid that I was wrestling was just starting out so I decided I would focus on my takedowns, my offense, and other things like that. He was still very mobile and you cannot overlook a child because you never know what they might do so I went out there and continued to practice my moves. I also adjusted to his moves and did what he did.

Braun was one eight-ranked Blue Jay wrestlers who won a victory on Thursday.

Mewes took his time to win the 9-1 major over Hugh Meyer at 170-pound, while Walters needed a total of 57 seconds in order to pin Justin Wardell.

Sam Schlepuetz was voted No. At 132 pounds, Sam Schlepuetz was the No. 4 wrestler, while Lucas, his younger brother, was fifth at 120 pounds.

Lucas fought the No. 1 state wrestler, Gage Glaser. Gage Glaser, the No. 3 wrestler in the state, fought Lucas for the entire three periods. Gage lost one match to make it 34-19 Jays. Jamestown won two more matches, with Rasmussen defeating Wyatt Turner 6-0. Sam then pin Gavin Morel to give the Jays a 43-19 lead.

Bo Nelson and Eric Chea, both juniors were ranked sixth at respective 195 and 152 pounds. Chea started Thursday’s dual by pining Thomas Meyer.

Eslick stated that Eric has come a long way. “We knew the technique was there, we know the athleticism was there — it was just the confidence factor for him — making him believe that he can do it and that he can compete with anyone in the state. He was thrilled to be ranked in the top ten for the first time. He has been an incredible sparkplug for us, and has done a wonderful job.”

Braun said, “Eric is probably the most entertaining wrestler I have ever seen in his life.” “His funk and the little spark that he has — you don’t see that too often in wrestling and it’s pretty fun to watch. It’s like getting a pin. It keeps us motivated and gets us going.

Nelson, the Jays’ former 220-pound starter has not seen much action this year, but was available to take part in the team’s first home dual.

Eslick gave Nelson “great credit,” Eslick stated. He has been losing weight over the past three weeks. For the team, he was at 195. That was his first match back — and it was a good one against a good guy. (Bo) A good wrestler. He was able to get some mat time tonight, so now it’s about getting rid of the rust. It was huge to see him in the lineup tonight.

Jays’ only problem was with their lighter weights. Dickinson’s 106-pounders Jake Glaser (113-pounder) and Aidan Dahmus (113-pounder) forced Jack Schauer or AJ Matzke to pin them.

Eslick stated that Dickinson’s lighter weights were something they knew was tough. “I believe that we could wrestle with them a little better next time.” Wrestling is all a matter of coming back from adversity. Wrestling can be described as both wins and losses in a match or in a dual. These kids have been battle-tested, so if there is a slight hiccup at 106 or 113, they are quick to bounce back and grab their fellow wrestlers.

Eslick could not be brought down by a few pins against a hard WDA opponent.

Eslick said, “It’s amazing to not have worry about who’s going on shift or who’s available or what JV child you’ve got.” “We did a great job the first half (of the season) holding it together and staying competitive and I give a lot of credit to the guys who sacrificed themselves filling in open holes and all of our JV kids who were kind of the sacrificial lambs (but) it’s nice to have all of our main guys back — it’s been a long time coming. It was an amazing experience to win our first home dual.
