Boston ranks among the 5 most dangerous cities in traffic around the world

According to a new study, Boston is ranked as one of the five most dangerous cities for traffic. The city’s congestion time has risen by 72 percent in the past year.

INRIX, a transportation data and analytics company, recently published its annual “Global Traffic Scorecard,” which identifies and ranks congestion and mobility trends in more than 1,000 cities across 50 countries.

INRIX compiled its 2023 report and compared them with pre-pandemic and year-over-year traffic trends. In addition, it considered emerging geopolitical or economic trends that could have an impact on daily commutes.

According to the study, Boston was the worst city for traffic in America and fourth in the world.

Boston drivers spent an average 134 hour sitting in traffic each day in 2022, up 56 hours from 2021.

Boston was fourth in the world behind London (156hrs) and Paris (128 hours) as the most congested American city. New York (117hrs), rounded out the top five global cities.

According to the study congestion cost Boston’s average motorist $2,270 last fiscal year.

Researchers also discovered that Massachusetts has one the worst traffic corridors anywhere in the country.

I-93 south, from US-3 into MA-3 was ranked fourth in congestion. This caused drivers to lose 99 hours of driving time during the 4 p.m. rush hour.

Traffic was still 10% below pre-pandemic levels despite the significant increase in congestion year-to-year.
