Harris, Biden court union vote at first official joint rally as Trump accused of ‘dodging’ Labor Day: Live

Kamala Harris is set to appear onstage with Joe Biden at their first official joint rally in Pennsylvania, as her campaign accused Donald Trump of “dodging labor on Labor Day.”

The vice president is appearing in person in both Michigan and Pennsylvania on Monday, and has deployed several surrogates – including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff – to make remarks across battleground states on her behalf.

Her appearance with Biden at the Labor Day parade in Pittsburgh marks the first time they have shared a speaking slot on the political stage since the president stepped off the Democratic ticket in July.

They will be joined by local and national union leaders as well as Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro.

In contrast, the Trump campaign has limited its Labor Day campaign to a single virtual event. In a statement posted to Truth Social the former president boasted about his own achievements for workers during his time in office and claimed all Americans were “suffering” under the current administration.

“Donald Trump is ditching workers on Labor Day because he is an anti-worker, anti-union extremist who will sell out working families for his billionaire donors if he takes power,” Harris campaign spokesperson Joseph Costello said in a statement.

Harris campaign addresses Trump’s remark that he had ‘every right’ to interfere with 2020 election

21:20 , Mike Bedigan

The Harris campaign has responded to Donald Trump’s recent, and brazen claim that he had “every right” to interfere with the 2020 presidential election.

“Everything Donald Trump has promised on the campaign trail – from ‘terminating’ the Constitution, to imprisoning his political opponents and promising to rule as a dictator on ‘day one’ – makes it clear that he believes he is above the law,” Harris-Walz 2024 Spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said.

“Now, Trump is claiming he had ‘every right’ to interfere in the 2020 election. He did not.

“While Donald Trump is pushing his false history about the past, the American people are ready for a new way forward. They know Vice President Harris is the tough-as-nails prosecutor we need to turn the page on chaos, fear, and division, and uphold the rule of law.”

Trump made the remarks on Sunday during an interview with Fox News, despite facing a slew of legal challenges, including a fresh indictment from Special Counsel Jack Smith over the former president’s election subversion case.

Last night in an interview with Fox News’ Mark Levin, Donald Trump admitted to interfering with the 2020 presidential election and claimed he had “every right” to do it.

“Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election where you have every right to do it, you get indicted and your poll numbers go up,” the former president said.

Harris campaign accuses Trump of ‘dodging labor on Labor Day’

19:00 , Mike Bedigan

The Harris campaign has accused Donald Trump of “dodging labor on Labor” day, despite his claims to be rallying the support of workers unions.

“Donald Trump is ditching workers on Labor Day because he is an anti-worker, anti-union extremist who will sell out working families for his billionaire donors if he takes power,” spokesperson Joseph Costello said in a statement.

:Vice President Harris is the only candidate for president who stands firmly on the side of labor and working Americans, and she is fighting to build up the middle class by cutting taxes, lowering costs, and creating opportunity.”

Trump issued his own statement earlier on Monday on Truth Social in which he boasted of his own achievements in office and claimed all Americans were “suffering” during the holiday weekend.

Trump may appoint Musk to axe ‘wasteful’ government programs

17:40 , James Liddell

Donald Trump could appoint Elon Musk to head up a committee identifying “wasteful” government programs to ax if he takes back the White House in November.

Trump’s advisers want to bring in prominent corporate leaders to help the government cut costs – and Musk has already publicly declared his interest in the role.

The idea was pitched to Trump by his former economic adviser, Steve Moore, who says creating a “blue ribbon” commission to eliminate wasteful federal spending “should be a high priority”, if the Republican presidential nominee wins a second term, The Washington Post reports.

Harris to oppose Japanese takeover of US Steel as Biden joins her on the campaign trail

16:40 , James Liddell

Kamala Harris is set to oppose the takeover of US Steel by Japanese firm Nippon Steel as she gets set to hit the campaign trail with Joe Biden for the first time since the president abandoned his re-election bid in July.

Harris will “stress her commitment to always have the backs of American steel workers,” according to a campaign official.

It marks Harris’s first public address on the proposed sale of US Steel to Japan’s biggest steelmake after Biden opposed the prospective deal in March, in order to “maintain strong American steel companies powered by American steel workers”.

Nippon Steel laid $15bn on the table in a proposed acquisition of US Steel.

The Democratic duo are heading back out on the campaign trail today, marking the first time they have shared a speaking slot on the political stage since Harris stepped on the ticket in place of Biden. They are set to deliver an address in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at 4.45 ET today.

Pittsburgh has earned the nickname ‘Steel City’ as a historical hub of the US Steel trade; and once one of the largest producers of the metal in the world.

Harris continues to juggle her own presidential campaign while remaining loyal to Biden as his vice president, and the existing policies they have pushed.

Moment Barron Trump learned of assassination attempt on father Donald revealed

Donald Trump has revealed details about the moment that his youngest son Barron Trump learned about the July 13 attempt on his life.

The former president sat down with Fox News’ Mark Levin to discuss his new book Save America, out on September 3, which features a now-famous photograph from the attempted assassination and claims to offer an “unparalleled look” into Trump’s time as the 45th president as well as, arguably a bit prematurely, his “vision for his next term.”

During the interview, Trump told the story of how 18-year-old Barron learned about the shooting while at a tennis lesson.

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris’s approaches to debate prep are, it seems, as different as their politics.

While Harris has been hunkering down with a circle of trusted and experienced advisors – with one even donning three-inch shoe lifts and an ill-fitting suit to play Trump – the former president is reportedly “not spending a lot of time” preparing for the September 10 debate on ABC News.

Biden, Harris head to Situation Room after death of Israeli hostages

15:10 , James Liddell

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will meet in the White House Situation Room along with the US hostage deal negotiation team this morning in the wake of the murder of six Israeli hostages in the Gaza city of Rafah.

The meeting, which will be closed to press, will focus on making an attempt to secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages held by Hamas militants, according to White House officials.

The President has wrapped up his two-week vacation at his Rehoboth Beach home in Delaware to fly back to the White House for the Labor Day meeting.

Among those murdered in the past few days was US citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, who was captured from the Nova Festival on October 7, 2023, in the deadliest single-day attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust.

‘Do not underestimate Kamala Harris on debate stage,’ Tulsi Gabbard warns

14:50 , James Liddell

Tulsi Gabbard has offered some words of advice to Donald Trump on Sunday: do not underestimate Kamala Harris on the debate stage.

The former Democrat representative-turned-Trump ally issued the warning during her CNN interview on Sunday, ahead of the looming Harris-Trump presidential debate which will be broadcast live on ABC on September 10.

“I think Kamala Harris has a lot of experience. She is not to be underestimated,” Gabbard, who has been supporting the former president with his debate prep, told host Dana Bash.

She continued: “President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have very different records. This is a unique situation where we have two candidates who have served at the highest offices in the land: President Trump four years as president, Kamala Harris now almost four years as vice president, working alongside President Biden.”

Trump’s latest obsession with Harris: claiming she lied about working at McDonald’s

14:30 , James Liddell

While still facing the fallout from his controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery last week, Donald Trump has launched a new line of attack on his Democratic presidential rival Kamala Harris: baselessly claiming that she is lying about working at McDonald’s in the 1980s.

Harris has repeatedly mentioned her brief stint holding down a summer job at the fast food joint while at college since she ascended to the top of the Democratic party’s ticket.

And, for some reason, it appears to have gotten under Trump’s skin.

‘Trump is anti-union scab’ billboards set to light up swing states this Labor Day

A suite of “Trump is anti-union scab” billboards will illuminate several key battleground states this Labor Day.

Last month, the president of the United Auto Workers union Shawn Fain called Donald Trump a “scab” before later revealing a red T-shirt reading “Trump is a scab” to a roaring crowd at the Democratic National Convention.

Now, the Democratic National Committee has paid for 19 digital billboards to be displayed across Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania using the viral phrase, according to Huffington Post.

“He has proven over and over again that he does not care about working Americans, and if he regains the Oval Office, he will answer only to his big-dollar friends and donors,” DNC spokesperson Maddy Mundy told the outlet.

“We were really kind of channeling Shawn Fain with that choice,” added senior DNC advisor Brad Woodhouse.

‘God thinks I’m going to straighten out this broken country,’ Trump says

12:50 , James Liddell

Donald Trump thinks God believes that he’s going to “straighten out” this after his scrape with death earlier this year.

The former president has continued to thank the divine for sparing his life after gunman Thomas cook opened fire at the Republican, striking him in the ear as he spoke at Butler, Pennsylvania, rally on July 13.

Trump previously told Dr Phil McGraw that God spared him so that he could save America, and perhaps even the world.

Now, speaking Fox New’s Life, Liberty, and Levin, the former president attempted to relay God’s thoughts and said he “thinks” that Trump is going to fix “broken” America.

“I think you think like, if you believe in God, you believe in God more. And somebody said like, why?,” he told host Mark Levin. “And I’d like to think that God thinks that I’m going to straighten out our country.”

He continued: “Our country is so sick and it’s so broken. Our country is just broken. And maybe that was the reason, I don’t know. I don’t know, a lot of people have said that.”

Maga loyalists and conservatives divided over Trump IVF proposal

09:33 , James Liddell

Donald Trump’s new proposal for the government or insurance companies to be mandated to pay for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment for Americans has already divided the Republican party – with two GOP senators giving opposing stances on the matter on Sunday.

The ex-president has been trying to navigate the post-Roe landscape since 2022, with limited success. As his presidential campaign has progressed throughout 2024, Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for appointing Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn federal protections on abortion — while he has simultaneously sought to distance himself from hardline opponents of abortion who are seeking to ban IVF and other fertility treatments, as well as the stricter end of GOP-led proposals to ban abortion at various points during the pregnancy.

Trump implements new line of Harris attack: her McDonald’s job

09:00 , James Liddell

Donald Trump is parroting a new line of attack against Kamala Harris, and he’s lovin’ it.

The vice president formerly claimed that she worked at McDonalds during an appearance on the Drew Barrymore Show in April.

Now, Trump has cast doubts over whether Harris really did flip burgers back in her youth.

“She also said, ‘I worked at McDonald’s.’ Turned out she didn’t work at McDonalds,” he baselessly claimed while speaking to conservative parental rights group, Moms for Liberty on Friday.

“After an exhaustive study that took about 20 minutes, they found out she never worked there. There’s a lot of fake stuff going on,” he added.

On Sunday, the former president took to his Truth Social to once again brand Harris a liar over her fast food chain claim, along with a photoshopped picture of the vice president.

Trump says Israeli hostage murder ‘wouldn’t have happened’ if he was in office

08:40 , James Liddell

Donald Trump said that the murder of six Israeli hostages, including US citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, would have never happened if he was still president.

The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the deaths in an early-morning briefing on Sunday, declaring that the hostages were “brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists,” just days before military personnel retrieved their bodies from a tunnel several dozen feet deep in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters flooded streets on Sunday night, urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree a deal with Hamas to return the remaining hostages.

Now, Trump has spoken out declaring that he will stop the war upon his prospective return to the White House.

“This terror would have never happened if I were President, and it will stop the day I am back in the Oval Office,” he wrote on X on Sunday evening.

New poll shows more enthusiastic support for Harris, more reservations over Trump

Sunday 1 September 2024 23:30 , Oliver O’Connell

The new ABC News/Ipsos poll, released today shows more enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris among those who back her, while a larger proportion of Donald Trump’s supporters have reservations about backing him compared to those who support the vice president.

Per Ipsos:

Among people who support Harris, most (64%) strongly support her, 18% support her with some reservations, and 19% mainly dislike the other candidates.

Among people who support Trump, 60% strongly support him. However, compared to Harris, nearly twice as many Trump supporters support him with reservations (31% support Trump with reservations vs. 18% for Harris).

There is a similar gap around the “anti-vote”, that is those who support their candidate because they mainly dislike the other candidates. Compared to Trump’s support, twice as many Harris supporters are backing her because they mainly dislike other candidates (19% support Harris because they mainly dislike other candidates vs. 9% of Trump supporters).

For most Americans (79%), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suspending his campaign and supporting Trump makes no difference in their vote. About one in ten (12%) say that RFK Jr. supporting Trump makes them more likely to back him, while a nearly equal share (9%) are now less likely to support Trump.

It’s a pork chop on a stick and a vanilla shake for Tim Walz at the Minnesota State Fair

Sunday 1 September 2024 22:30 , AP

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz munched on a pork chop on a stick and washed it down with a vanilla shake Sunday as the Minnesota governor and his family visited his home state fair.

Flanked by his wife, Gwen, and their daughter, Hope, and with a security detail trailing behind, Walz eyed rows of food vendors offering all manner of fair delicacies, many served on a stick.

“For those not from Minnesota, just to be clear, there’s a lot of great state fairs in the country, this is the best one,” Walz said. “I can say that having tried pork chops in Iowa.”

Lindsey Graham brands Harris a ‘wrecking ball’ on Israel

Sunday 1 September 2024 22:10 , Oliver O’Connell

Donald Trump loyalist Lindsey Graham went on the offense against Kamala Harris on Sunday calling her a “wrecking ball” for her stance on Israel’s war with Hamas, after it was announced that six hostages had been found dead in Gaza.

Graham appeared on ABC’s This Week on Sunday and opened up a line of attack against Harris’s foreign policy credentials – something that the Trump campaign has been trying to get off the ground this past week as it pushes back on criticism over a controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery and a host of issues related to his running mate JD Vance.

“I would say on foreign policy, she [Harris] has been a wrecking ball,” Graham said on Sunday.

John Bowden reports.

Trump posts video messages from Gold Star family members amid Arlington visit controversy

Sunday 1 September 2024 21:56 , Oliver O’Connell

The war of words over Donald Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery continued over the weekend with his campaign issuing a statement and sharing videos from the Gold Star military families that the former president had joined at the memorial on Monday, when they marked three years since 13 service members were killed during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In the statement shared on Sunday, the Gold Star families – who have lost a loved one in military service – defended the Republican presidential nominee and insisted that Vice President Kamala Harris was the candidate politicizing fallen US service members.

Some family members also recorded video messages that the former president posted on Truth Social, saying Trump was honoring their loved ones when he came to Arlington.

Scaramucci claims he’s met only one person who hates former president more than Melania

Sunday 1 September 2024 21:30 , Oliver O’Connell

Anthony Scaramucci, a former aide to Donald Trump, has claimed he has only met one person who hates his ex-boss more than his wife Melania Trump.

Speaking in an interview with MeidasTouch on Saturday, Scaramucci suggested that the former president’s wife might be the only person who would like to see Vice President Kamala Harris win the presidential election more than he does, because “she hates him.”

Michelle Del Rey has the story.

Trump blames Harris for deaths of Israeli hostages and likens it to Afghanistan withdrawal chaos

Sunday 1 September 2024 21:24 , Oliver O’Connell

Donald Trump has blamed “a complete lack of American Strength and Leadership” for the deaths of six Israeli hostages including one US citizen, likening the situation to the “Debacle of the Afghanistan Withdrawal”.

He also yet again baselessly accused Joe Biden and Kamala Harris of allowing the deaths to occur “because they only care about Weaponizing the Department of Justice” against him.

Here’s what he wrote on Truth Social this afternoon:

We grieve the senseless death of the Israeli Hostages, horrifically including a wonderful American Citizen, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, murdered by Hamas due to a complete lack of American Strength and Leadership. Make no mistake – This happened because Comrade Kamala Harris and Crooked Joe Biden are poor Leaders. Americans are getting slaughtered overseas, while Kamala is disparaging and making up lies about Gold Star families, and Biden is sleeping on the beach on this 16th consecutive day of vacation. They have blood on their hands! Sadly, this is the total lack of “Leadership” that Kamala and Biden represent – One that allows terrorists to take American lives, because they only care about Weaponizing the Department of Justice against their Political Opponent. Just like the Debacle of the Afghanistan Withdrawal that claimed 13 American lives, Kamala and Biden’s judgment has not only put lives at risk, but is directly responsible for unnecessary deaths that should have never happened….

….Our Country and our amazing people are not safe under Joe Biden, and will be less safe under Kamala Harris. This terror would have never happened if I were President, and it will stop the day I am back in the Oval Office. America will be Strong Again, and that will make the World Safe and Secure!

Arlington cemetery controversy shines spotlight on Utah Gov Spencer Cox’s sudden embrace of Trump

Sunday 1 September 2024 21:00 , AP

A few months ago, Utah Gov Spencer Cox was one of the few prominent Republicans consistently keeping his distance from Donald Trump, whose brash style seemed to be the antithesis of a brand of politics Cox had carefully cultivated that centered on unity and respect.

Cox did not vote for Trump in 2016 or 2020, and told CNN in July that he would not vote for him this year. The governor said the then-president’s role in inciting the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol went too far.

Days later, after an assassination attempt on Trump at a Pennsylvania rally, Cox changed his mind.

Harris calls on Trump to debate with mics ‘on the whole time’

Sunday 1 September 2024 20:30 , Reuters

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee in the U.S. presidential election in November, on Saturday called on her Republican rival Donald Trump to debate her with their microphones switched on throughout the event.

Harris and the former president have both agreed to a debate, hosted by ABC News, on Sept. 10.

“Donald Trump is surrendering to his advisors who won’t allow him to debate with a live microphone. If his own team doesn’t have confidence in him, the American people definitely can’t,” Harris said in a post on X.

“We are running for President of the United States. Let’s debate in a transparent way — with the microphones on the whole time.”

Trump has said that he preferred to have his microphone kept on and that he did not like it muted during the last debate against then-contender President Joe Biden.

So-called “hot mics” can help or hurt political candidates, catching off-hand comments that sometimes were not meant for the public. Muted microphones also prevent the debaters from interrupting their opponent.

A representative for ABC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The debate would be the first time Harris and Trump face off since Biden dropped out of the presidential race following a poor performance at a CNN debate in June that raised doubts about his mental acuity.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance have agreed to an Oct. 1 debate on CBS News.

George Clooney calls Biden most ‘selfless’ president since George Washington

Sunday 1 September 2024 20:23 , Oliver O’Connell

George Clooney has hailed Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race as “the most selfless thing that anybody has done since George Washington.”

In an appearance at the 2024 Venice Film Festival on Sunday September 1 – where he is promoting his new film Wolfs with co-star Brad Pitt – the actor was asked about the “impact” of the damning op-ed he wrote for The New York Times titled “I Love Joe Biden, But We Need a New Nominee”.

The essay is seen as one of the key turning points as momentum built to urge the president to step aside in favor of a younger candidate. Less than two weeks later, Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris — who was also quickly endorsed by Clooney.

In spite of favorable polling, Harris campaign embraces ‘underdog’ label

Sunday 1 September 2024 20:00 , Oliver O’Connell

Kamala Harris’s campaign is entering September with the mindset of a campaign running from behind – even as polling shows that is not the case.

A memo sent out by the Harris campaign on Sunday morning claimed that the vice president was still the “underdog” in the race and projected “razor-thin” margins for the race in November.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’s campaign manager, said in the memo that the reason for this mentality was Donald Trump and his continued dominance over the Republican party — whose core base of supporters is as motivated as ever to support him in 2024.

And she previewed how the Harris campaign looks to make up the ground it supposedly needs to win key battleground states in November.

John Bowden reports from Washington, DC.
