First time Australian Open win for Chinese man

Shang Juncheng, a teenager from China, became the first man to win an Australian Open singles match in the main draw. This feat was hailed as “huge” by his country.

The 17-year old qualifier was the youngest player in men’s draw. He defeated Germany’s Oscar Otte, 6-2 and 6-4, 7-6 (2/7), 7-5 in less than three hours.

He won the third match point at Melbourne Park after saving two break points.

His reward? A tough second round encounter with Frances Tiafoe (16th seed) or Daniel Altmaier (German 16th seed).

“I think it is huge for Chinese men’s tennis. We have had some really great players on the women’s side, but not many big names on the men’s side,” stated Shang, also known as Jerry.

“So, I believe we are very fortunate that I am part of it, and I’m very grateful that I’m a part of this team. We are hoping to do great things in the future.

Shang achieved many personal milestones, in addition to China’s significance, including his first major win and his fourth tour-level win.

He stated, “I think overall this week was different for my, playing my first Slam. Every day I was pretty nervous getting onto the court.”

“But at the same time, it’s one of the best moments I have had so far in my career, so I’m  just very excited to be on court, and everything is a learning process for me.”

Shang is leading an historic Chinese charge in Melbourne. Three male Chinese players are competing at every Grand Slam main draws since the Open era started in 1968.

Zhang Zhizhen is also there, as well as Wu Yibing.

Seven Chinese were also drawn in the women’s singles draw. Zhang Shuai is the leader and is currently ranked 22 worldwide.

China’s most successful player, Li Na, is now retired after winning the French Open in 2011 as well as the Australian Open three-years later.

Shang answered Shang’s question about why Chinese women were traditionally better than men when he asked: “It is a complicated thing.

“I don’t know how to answer that question, but it is a significant step in men’s tennis.

“But I believe that we are on the right path right now. We can do better in the Slams in the three-out of five sets and we hope that this can happen in future.”
