Police report that homeless man was beaten to death by Upstate SC bridge.

Law enforcement officials have found that a man believed to be homeless was beaten to death beneath a Spartanburg bridge.

Steven Shawn Smith (31 years old) was found with blunt force trauma to his neck and back in the early hours Monday morning.

According to the Spartanburg Police Department, the death is being investigated as murder.

A call came in from Miracle Hill Rescue mission reporting that a man who was under a bridge nearby did not seem to be breathing at 3 AM on March 27.

“Ultimately, we are looking at this as a suspicious death that was caused by the hands of another,” Spartanburg Police Captain Tim Metz told WSPA-TV.

Rusty Clevenger, Spartanburg County Coroner, stated to several media outlets that Smith could have lived under the bridge with multiple people.
