Kevin O’Connell “We were looking deeper on that last play”

The Minnesota Vikings were defeated by the New York Giants in a brutal match. Their season ended with a disappointing 31-24 score. Kirk Cousins, the quarterback, threw the ball five yard short of the fourth-and-eight marker on the final play.

Cousins did indeed throw the ball off the sticks, with the game at stake. Nex Gen Stats demonstrates it here.

It’s incredibly frustrating that you are running only three vertical routes with none of them being even close to the sticks and your two outlets are right by the line of scrimmage.

In a postgame interview with the Vikings radio broadcast KFAN, head coach Kevin O’Connell said that they were looking to go deeper.

“We were looking to go deeper. Kirk just put it in play.”

This was an all-out disaster considering the football situation this season. There is, however, an element of poetry to Cousins’ final pass of the season, and perhaps final pass of his Vikings career being short of the first down marker.
