Columbia, SC (GLOBE NEWSWIRE), April 24, 2023 — The Columbia VA Health Care System has dedicated a new Fisher House to the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center, today, in a ceremony presided by Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer Dr. Christopher Saslo, President of Fisher House Foundation David A. Coker, and Columbia VAHCS Director/CEO Dr. David Omura.
The Fisher House is a 15,000 sq. Fisher House, which was completed in 2022, will provide free lodging to families of veterans and service members. This will allow them to stay close to their loved one during a stressful time while receiving medical treatment. It can save veterans and military families over half a mil dollars a year when it is fully occupied.
“I remain inspired by the Fisher House Foundation’s focus on providing the best home away from home lodging that anyone could hope to have available to them,” said Omura. “This new Columbia VA Fisher House is a beautiful addition to our 97‐acre campus. It will be a place where our veterans and their families will feel the love and support of the Columbia VA team, and our wonderful volunteers daily.”
This is the 94ᵗʰ house on Fisher House Foundation’s Road to 100 Fisher Houses. By the end of the year 2024, the network of houses in the United States and Germany will reach 100. This is the second VA Fisher House located in South Carolina, joining the one in Charleston.
“We are excited to dedicate the VA Columbia Fisher House,” said Coker. “This house stands as a symbol of the strength of this community and willingness to care for those who have already given so much. South Carolinans have shown by example that they can be part of the solution, and care for our veterans and their family members.
The Columbia Fisher House features 16 suites that are accessible to people with disabilities, a large kitchen, communal dining, living and family rooms, a laundry room, and a patio shared by all. The home was gifted to VA upon completion as part of the public‐private partnership between Fisher House Foundation and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Fisher House Foundation proudly recognizes the generosity of the following contributors for their extraordinary support of our military and veteran families: 84 Lumber Company, Blue Cross Blue Shield South Carolina, Dominion Energy South Carolina, In Honor of Captain Edmund W. Dreyfuss, Enterprise Rent‐a‐Car Foundation, Floor & Décor, Friends of Fisher House Charleston, Friends of Fisher House Columbia, Michelin North America, Inc., Samsung Electronics America, Denise J. Tucker, Vehicles For Veterans, and the many gifts of a grateful nation.
Fisher House Foundation has a network of 94 comfort houses where families with military or veteran loved ones can stay for free during treatment. These homes are near major VA and military hospitals in the US and Europe. Fisher Houses offer up to 21 suites each with a private bedroom and bathroom. Families can share a kitchen, laundry, dining area, and inviting living room. Fisher House Foundation does not charge a fee for lodging. Since inception, the program has saved military and veteran families an estimated $575 million in out‐of‐pocket costs for lodging and transportation. www.fisherhouse.org
