Quality coaching reaps rewards for rookie quarterback of the Niners, Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy defeated the Seattle Seahawks 41 to 23 on Saturday, thanks to a superb effort in the second period. Purdy ended the game with 332 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. He also ran a rushing touchdown. This was his sixth consecutive start.

Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL draft, was entered into the starting line-up to replace Jimmy Garopolo. He looked great from Day One. What is the secret to this? Is Purdy better than Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback? I think so. Is the skill-position player of the Niners demonstrably better than that of the Steelers to make up the talent gap? Again, I’d argue no.

Why is Purdy being treated like a first-rounder? It all comes down to coaching. Purdy and Pickett are two examples of how an innovative and smart coaching staff can create an offense that suits the quarterback. The Steelers have a staff trying to place Pickett in a system that doesn’t maximize his potential.

It all boils down, of course, to Matt Canada, offensive coordinator. The fact the team has been silent about Canada’s future as teams are shuffling coaches tells me the team plans to stick with Canada for better or worse. Pickett has such a high ceiling but Purdy’s performance in the playoffs just screams as to the value of how to smartly coach a young quarterback and the Steelers aren’t listening.
