According to the analysis, 28 December – dubbed “Returns Wednesday” – was the most popular day for people to begin the process of returning unwanted gifts in 2022. But many consumers were even faster. Some people even started sending back Christmas gifts on Christmas Day.

Philipp GoldbergnShift’s Product Director for Returns said that “this is yet another evidence that people shop online and expect to be able return products quickly, easily, and without any hassle.” Shoppers are more likely than not to return purchases if a retailer’s returns policy is unclear or complicated. This is especially true if they’re buying gifts for others.

These statistics were compiled and analyzed by nShift, using data on returns from the past week. December 2022. It was possible to identify which days of the week were most popular for people to start the ball rolling by looking at the day on which carrier companies were alerted about the need to collect the item.  Over a quarter of all requests for returns from the week were made on Wednesday 28. This was closely followed Thursday 29 (22.3%) et Tuesday 27 (22%).
