You can pursue potential deals before the NBA deadline

Yahoo Sports Exclusive

The impending trade deadline and constant injuries are making it easy to grab waiver wire pickups or make deals in fantasy. You can manage risk and maximize your potential upside by trading if you know how to play your cards.

There are a few players who could not be written up in this article. These would be veterans of tanking teams. If you are rostering someone such as Mason Plumlee, Jakob Poeltl or Bojan Bogdanovic make sure to start making exit plans as soon possible. You should be especially concerned about veterans with expiring contracts. They don’t want those guys to go. If necessary, they will accept a lower offer.

There are still opportunities to buy low and then sell high, even if you don’t have trade deadlines. Here are four options to think about:

John Collins, Atlanta Hawks – Buy Low

Collins’ name has been in trade rumors for many years. According to reportsThe Utah Jazz are the most involved team on Collins. However, the Washington Wizards aren’t too far behind.

It’s difficult to imagine any team purchasing Collins and giving him his services. There are fewer He has more responsibilities now than he does now. Atlanta is aware that it is bad optics to pay someone a $98.42 million four-year contract while only passively featuring them in the offense.

Collins’ usage rate is down for the fourth season in a row. Notably, Collins’ 2019-20 campaign saw an astounding ranking of 81. SEVENTH In per-game nine-category production, behind 21.6 points on 58.5 percent shooting, were 10.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. They also had 1.5 assists and 1.4 triples in 33.2 minutes. This was also the year that he played most center (before Clint Capela joined).

Ideally, the team that deals for Collins has a floor-spacing five — I really like the fit in Washington, and there are lineup combinations that make sense in Utah — because he’s been underutilized as a lob threat since Capela arrived in Atlanta. Collins should be more productive regardless of the trade partner.

Buy Low: Andrew Wiggins, Golden State Warriors

Wiggins’ first five games after a groin injury have been difficult. He averaged 12.6 points, 35.6 percent shooting, 4.2 rebound, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 steals in just 27.2 minutes. Wiggins’ roster person probably believes he will return to his old form sooner than expected, but it is still a great time to make an offer.

In the end, Wiggins is one of the best fantasy assets in the NBA. You have many options to win a trade, especially when you are building a balanced roster. In per-game nine-cat value this season, Wiggins ranks a surprising 39th — above bigger-name players like Trae Young, Zach LaVine and Rudy Gobert. Young should not be traded for Wiggins, but you don’t need to. You can probably move someone like Tre Jones, Marcus Smart or Wendell Carter — all of whom rank outside of the Top 80 and provide stats that Take a look They aren’t better than Wiggins’. Wiggins’s overall performance is excellent, with 2.2 combined steals+blocks and 1.3 turnovers. Wiggins’ role is also safe.

Russell Westbrook, Los Angeles Lakers – Sell High

You’re looking for that sell-high moment in Westbrook? The point guard has averaged 22.7 points per game on 48/36/67 shooting. He also assists with 8.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals over the last 34.0 minutes.

His efficiency isn’t sustainable. His splits have been 44/30/67 over the last three seasons with less volume. He might be learning things or he may just be on a seven-game hot streak. I prefer the latter.

The volume is too high, Since mid-December the Lakers have been without Anthony Davis (foot), while Lonnie Walke (knee), and Austin Reaves(hamstring) have both missed six games. This means Westbrook will get more minutes and touches.

Not only is this, but the Lakers can still make a win-now deal using the most-talked about picks in the NBA. The hypothetical win-now players would take Westbrook’s volume. It is best to move Westbrook while he is hot and not to get into a bind.

Sell High: Jonas Valanciunas, New Orleans Pelicans

Valanciunas is seeing increased usage after Zion Williamson (hamstring), who started missing time in the early part of this month, and Brandon Ingram’s (toe) absence since late November. Valanciunas’s averages over the seven previous games are 21.1 points (11.7 rebounds) and 1.9 assist in 29.1minutes. In his 37 previous appearances, Valanciunas averaged just 13.5 point, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 24.4 minute.

Williamson is expected to return in late January or early February. Ingram has been working day-to-day for several months. Both will be back in the lineup eventually though. Valanciunas should resume normalizing his workload when that happens. Although there are plenty of fantasy managers willing to deal with him for rebound stability and a good return, you should be able use the current situation to your advantage.
