While the Switch has outsold PS4, Nintendo sees greater challenges ahead

The Switch is now the third-best-selling console, surpassing both the Game Boy & PlayStation 4. Nintendo announced that the console sold 122.55 millions units as of 2022. earnings reportIt is currently second only to the PlayStation 2 and DS in lifetime sales.

This is the only bright spot in a dark cloud. For the nine months ending December 31, Switch unit sales fell to 14.91million from 18.95million the year before. Revenue also declined by 5.6 percent in the fiscal year that ended March 31st. The new game sales fell 4 percent in the same time frame. Pokemon Scarlet/Violet Titles (which amounted to 20.61 millions units) were unable to offset this decline. As a result, the company has lowered its fiscal year forecast From 19 million to 18 million units with 5 million fewer games — continuing a downward trend from last year.

Nintendo blamed the continued shortage of semiconductors for the decline in sales. The lack of consoles also had an impact on software sales. Sony however, set a new record for PS5 sales last quarter. 7.1 million soldThe number of people who have a disability is up by 82 percent over the past year.

The aging hardware is likely to be the root of Nintendo’s problems. With the Switch Lite and older Switch models experiencing a decline in sales, buyers are choosing the OLED model. The Switch is relatively less powerful than the PS5 or Xbox Series consoles. Sony, Microsoft and others are investing in subscriptions and games.

Nintendo declared last year that its next console will be “transitional”a major focus for us“, and it could soon become more urgent. It’ll be fascinating to see if Switch is able to remain the best-selling console ever. However, Nintendo will need to sell 33 million more units in order to surpass PlayStation 2.
