After dropping out of Stanford University at the age of 19, Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos.

Prosecutors claim that Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos, fled the US after being convicted on fraud charges last January.

According to court records, the 38 year-old purchased a one way ticket to Mexico last January.

Prosecutors stated that the trip was cancelled only after the government had raised the unauthorised flight.

Holmes was convicted for defrauding investors in her blood testing start-up that was once valued at $9bn (£7.5bn).

Former Silicon Valley star claimed that the technology could diagnose diseases with just a few drops. It didn’t work, and the company was dissolution in 2018, after multiple lawsuits.

On Thursday, Holmes’s spouse also purchased a one way ticket to Mexico in the most recent court filing.

“The government anticipates [Holmes] I will respond that she did not leave the country as originally planned. But it is difficult to say with certainty. [she] Prosecutors stated that they would have done the same if the government had not intervened.”

Holmes has requested comment from the BBC.

Holmes was sentenced in November to more than 11 year imprisonment. She was given the order to surrender to prison at her sentencing hearing on 27 April.

She appealed her conviction soon after, and now she is asking for a judge’s permission to keep her free until April while her appeal is heard at the federal court. It could take over a year.

Her lawyers claimed Holmes would raise “substantial issues” that could justify a new trial.

The latest court filing in California said Holmes has been paying $13,000 (£10,500) a month to live on an estate as her appeal is heard.

Prosecutors want her surrender to the authorities as scheduled in April. “The time is right for Elizabeth Holmes, to answer for her crimes nearly a decade back,” they stated. “There aren’t two systems of justice, one for the wealthy and the other for the poor.

On 17 March, a judge will hear her motion for a delay in her sentence.

After dropping out from Stanford University at the age of 19, Holmes founded Theranos. After Holmes dropped out of Stanford University at age 19, Theranos’ value soared after executives said it could revolutionize disease diagnosis.

The rise and fall the start-up was documented in several popular podcasts, TV shows, and a Hulu series called The Dropout. Amanda Seyfried played Holmes.

Sunny Balwani was Holmes’s business associate and the former president at Theranos. He was sentenced in December to nearly 13 years.

Holmes has apologized for her business failures and stated she felt deep pain for those who were hurt because of what she did.
