This app can help you book a flight to a destination based on a photo.

We tested United Airlines’ “Search by Image” function.

It’s happened for all of us. It happens to everyone. You scroll on social media and see a stunning image of an incredible place. But there is no way to know where it is.

Well, United Our team is available to help. Search By Image is a function that the airline offers in its app Allows you to upload photos of destinations. The app will identify them and show you how to fly there.

A spokesperson for United said that Search by Image is a way to meet customers at their point of inspiration. Customers can upload photos to the United app and find the nearest airports to the destinations shown in the image. Travel + LeisureIt was noted that the feature was launched last spring.

It’s an interesting idea in theory but I decided to test it. The more obscure side of this spectrum is where I started. I uploaded a blurry picture of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, which I took through my car’s window while on a cross-country trip several weeks ago. (I was not the driver, but the passenger). Although it was a terrible photo by any standards, it was clear that the Arch was the subject. The app couldn’t pick up the location.

My next test was a bit more difficult. I used Gillian Anderson’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I was curious to see if the app might be able to recognize the details — namely the pink star on a black background — and correctly identify Los Angeles. Again, no luck.

Realizing that I was not being fair, I chose a simpler route. I uploaded a photo that I took of Bora Bora’s Otemanu. The silhouette of the former volcano is very distinctive. Bingo. It worked. It worked. There were many other identification successes with the app, including an artistically cropped photo of Louvre’s Glass Pyramid. ParisThis is a view from the top of a hotel tower of Perth, Western Australia. It also shows the Crystal Bridge at Myriad Botanical Gardens, Oklahoma City.

While Google’s image search tool is not as comprehensive as United’s, it was still very impressive in recognizing my photos. As the feature isn’t even a year old yet, it’s just going to get better with time — United plans to continually update its image database to return even more results.

You can search by image to find the United feature in your app. To see if United has found your destination, you can either take a picture in your current location or upload one to your camera roll. Download the United app here.
