Trump v Harris – Live: Walz lauds ‘smart women’ versus ‘smallest man in world’ as Vance stokes tension in Ohio
Minnesota Governor and Democratic Party vice presidential candidate Tim Walz told a crowd in Wisconsin on Saturday that his life hack “for all the guys out there” is “surround yourself with smart women and listen to them and you’ll do just fine. That includes my fellow cat owner Taylor Swift”.
He added: It’s really great to have all of these women help us beat the smallest man in the world… Donald Trump.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris gave her her first solo interview since becoming the party’s nominee, pitching herself as “a new generation of leadership” and promising to help small businesses and first-time homebuyers.
Outrage continues following Trump’s claim during Tuesday’s likely-only presidential debate that the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio (who are there legally, and at the town’s invitation), were stealing and eating domestic pets
While the city officials and the governor have denied this is happening, Trump’s running mate, Ohio senator JD Vance has further stoked tensions by reposting an unverified video as alleged evidence. Footage of what appears to be the Proud Boys on a main thoroughfare has surfaced and bomb threats have been called into hospitals, schools, and offices.
In 51 days, Harris will go head-to-head with Trump as Americans cast their votes in the 2024 election.

Catherine Pepinster writes:
Where does politics end and religion begin? Pope Francis has stoked that debate once again with his recent intervention in the US presidential campaign, where he commented on the race between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Voters, he told journalists on his plane back to Rome from a tour of Asia, will have to choose between the “lesser” of two evils: that of Donald Trump’s anti-migrant policies, and Kamala Harris’s support for women’s abortion rights.
This may seem puzzling to some, who view being anti-migrant and supportive of abortion as at opposite ends of the political spectrum. But from the Pope’s point of view, they are part of a continuum of being “pro-life” – thinking that has seen Francis also speak out passionately against the death penalty and the Catholic Church being opposed to assisted dying.

Racial tensions in Springfield have simmered for months. Trump’s rhetoric now has Haitians there in a full-blown ‘panic’
21:00 , Andrea Cavallier
After Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance helped supercharge a false, racist rumor that Haitian refugees in small-town Ohio were stealing and consuming people’s household pets, the fiction was duly parrotted by running mate Donald Trump during a nationally televised debate against Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.
The compounding myths, which the leader of notorious neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe gleefully took credit for having helped popularize, were swiftly debunked by, among others, the Springfield mayor, city manager, and police department.
But the claims have not only inflamed existing tensions in Springfield, they have also managed to further traumatize a group of people who fled civil war and ceaseless gang violence for the sleepy Rust Belt town of 58,000.

Days after his debate drubbing by Harris, Donald Trump is still flailing
18:30 , Andrea Cavallier
Days after a debate that he hoped would restore his 2024 election lead over Vice President Kamala Harris, former president Donald Trump has found himself digging deeper and deeper into a hole of his own making.
He is trailing Harris in fundraising, in most polls taken following their face-off in Philadelphia on Tuesday, and now in the poll-of-polls averages that political forecasters look to when making their predictions of who will win the November presidential election.
Perhaps most importantly, he is beginning to fall behind Harris in nearly all of the key states where voters will, under America’s byzantine electoral system, determine who shall serve atop the country’s executive branch for the next four years.
It’s a stunning and quick reversal of fortune for the former president, who has spent most of the time since he announced his third presidential campaign leading in those same polls.
Despite the candidate’s messaging troubles, the Trump campaign still believes they are ahead.

Robert De Niro has attacked Donald Trump as “a jerk” and “an idiot,” arguing that if the former President is re-elected in November he will not relinquish power.

During a new interview for Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? on Max, De Niro was asked whether he believed Trump would voluntarily give up power after serving a potential second term.
“You know he won’t,” replied the actor. “You know he won’t. He even said it. He’s never going to give it up. And anybody who deludes themselves in thinking that he is, shame on you.”
Wallace went on to ask De Niro whether the actor had any run-ins with the real estate mogul in New York during the 1970s and 1980s, and whether there was any personal animosity between the pair.
“No. I never wanted anything to do with him,” responded De Niro. “He’s a jerk, an idiot, who wants to meet a clown like that?

Can Kamala Harris win Pennsylvania? Just ask the mayor of Scranton

When Paige Cognetti first ran to become mayor of Scranton, she was told she couldn’t win because she did not have an Irish last name. She also had to overcome the fact that no woman had held the position in the city’s history.
Her victory in a special election in 2019, and again two years later, was seen by many as a sign of shifting tides.
“There were a lot of factors against me,” she says over coffee at Abe’s Deli, in the center of the town. “But I think it was pretty clear that the city needed a change candidate,” she adds.
Kamala Harris visits the area on Friday to try to win over the same kind of voters that helped Cognetti win in this key city in the swing state of Pennsylvania. Donald Trump was also there last month. It is no exaggeration to say that her path to the White House runs through these streets.

When asked about the concerns from Republican colleagues about Donald Trump’s apparent ties to far-right activist Laura Loomer, the former president stumbled to provide a real answer, instead calling her a “supporter” five times.
The question comes after Loomer, notorious for pushing outrageous conspiracy theories and racist rhetoric, joined Trump on his plane to Philadelphia ahead of his debate against Kamala Harris on Tuesday. She also attended the 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York — despite previously claiming that the terror attacks were an “inside job.” Their recent associations have prompted a few notable Trump allies to warn that he should distance himself from such a polarizing figure, especially as the election nears.

Kamala Harris’s summer job at McDonalds is the latest thing under Trump’s skin

While still facing the fallout from his controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery last week, Donald Trump has launched a new line of attack on his Democratic presidential rival Kamala Harris: baselessly claiming that she is lying about working at McDonald’s in the 1980s.
Harris has repeatedly mentioned her brief stint holding down a summer job at the fast food joint while at college since she ascended to the top of the Democratic party’s ticket.
And, for some reason, it appears to have gotten under Trump’s skin.
Over the weekend, the former president has repeatedly accused Harris – without any evidence – of lying about working at McDonald’s.

The crowd at Tim Walz’s rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Thursday trolled Donald Trump over his false claims that Haitian immigrants are eating pets, breaking out into chants of: “We don’t eat cats!”
The Democratic vice presidential nominee reflected on Tuesday’s presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Trump, teasing the former president with his now-classic buzzword for the Republican ticket: “weird.”
“He said a lot of weird stuff too, so I’m just going to say that,” the Minnesota governor told the crowd.

Friday 13 September 2024 21:50 , Gustaf Kilander
Kamala Harris is surging past Donald Trump in the betting odds following Tuesday’s debate debacle for the former president.
After having started this week behind Trump, Harris is now even with him or ahead, according to a number of U.K. and offshore betting markets, USA Today noted.
At the U.K. bookmaker Betfair Exchange, more than $1.1 million was wagered during Tuesday night’s showdown, with Harris taking the lead about halfway through the debate, which went on for over 90 minutes.

Harris campaign enters its ‘Kamala Era’ with new Taylor Swift-themed ads
Friday 13 September 2024 21:20 , Inga Parkel
The Kamala Harris campaign has swiftly capitalized on Taylor Swift’s public endorsement of the Harris-Walz ticket with the launch of its new advertisements.
On Friday (September 13), just days after the megastar, 34, announced she would be voting for Harris in the 2024 presidential election, the Democratic National Committee displayed its new slogan – “A New Way Forward…. Ready for It?” and “We’re In Our Kamala Era” – across digital billboards in New York’s Times Square and the Las Vegas strip.
The first part of the motto is a reference to the lead track off Swift’s 2017 Reputation album, while the second portion is a play on Swift’s record-breaking Eras tour.

Can Kamala Harris beat Donald Trump? Latest poll updates
Friday 13 September 2024 21:05 , Alicja Hagopian
In less than 53 days, Vice President Kamala Harris will go head-to-head with Donald Trump as Americans cast their votes in the 2024 election.
Fresh polls show that Harris has seen a boost among voters, after the candidates faced off in the presidential debate in Philadelphia, the first since President Joe Biden stepped down from the Democratic ticket in July.
All polls show that Harris “won” the debate in the eyes of voters. So how will she fare against Trump in November?

Colin Jost roasts Trump, says his comedy special will be ‘second-funniest live event this week’
Friday 13 September 2024 20:50 , Greg Evans
Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost and Michael Che have roasted Donald Trump’s remarks about immigrants eating cats and dogs in their first-ever live comedy special.
Colin Jost & Michael Che Present: New York After Dark premiered on Peacock on Thursday and saw the duo take a timey swipe at the former president after his bizarre outburst at Tuesday’s election debate with Kamala Harris.
In a claim, that was almost immediately debunked by ABC News moderator David Muir, Trump said: “In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating – they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. And this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”

Trump obsesses at golf course event over ABC anchor for fact-checking him during debate: ‘Foolish fool’
Friday 13 September 2024 20:42 , Katie Hawkinson
Donald Trump has resorted to mocking the ABC News moderator who fact-checked him during his first debate with Vice President Kamala Harris.
ABC News moderator David Muir fact-checked Trump multiple times during his debate with Harris. Now, the former president is railing against him, calling the broadcaster a “foolish fool” during a press conference at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in Rancho Palos Verdes, California on Friday.
“You wouldn’t have to need a bureau of justice statistics to know that crime is worse than it’s ever been,” Trump said. “They probably watched the debate and probably heard this foolish man, this foolish fool, make that statement to me that, ‘no no, crime is coming down, the FBI said it was coming down.’”

VOICES: Trump has found a new way to contradict reality
Friday 13 September 2024 20:20 , Ryan Coogan
Donald has just ducked out of a second debate against Kamala Harris – presumably because he remembered the trouncing he got during the first round (although he seems to think that Hannibal Lecter is a real person, so that’s a coin toss).
His reasoning? Why, because he “clearly” won the first debate, of course, so he doesn’t see a need for a second one. You know, the debate where he said that immigrants are roaming the country looking for pets to eat, and talked about executing newborns? Those are all the signs of a slam dunk victory, baby…
Trump, ever the compassionate sparring partner, thinks that his opponent should “focus” on her job as vice president, instead of coming up with new ways to eviscerate him on national television. Harris, on the other hand, seems to disagree, telling a campaign rally in North Carolina that the two “owe” voters another debate, because “what is at stake could not be more important” (with “what is at stake” presumably being an opportunity to figure out if Trump thinks Springfield, Ohio, is where Homer Simpson lives).

Harris campaign mocks Trump’s California press conference
Friday 13 September 2024 20:11 , Gustaf Kilander
A Harris spokesperson called Trump’s press conference “rambling, defensive,” and “often incoherent.”
Donald Trump took his trainwreck on the debate stage straight to California.
In a rambling, defensive, often incoherent event to promote his golf course, he yet again showed the country how he is melting down.
He said ‘nothing was done wrong’ in Charlottesville when neo-Nazis marched there, defended hanging out with a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, and doubled down on the conspiracy theories ripping an Ohio community apart.
He refused to address his plan to end the Affordable Care Act, ban abortion, and raise middle class taxes by nearly $4,000.
Americans are tired of Trump’s same old playbook and will reject him this November.

Trump gives evasive answer on why far-right activist Laura Loomer has joined his entourage amid Republican warnings
Friday 13 September 2024 19:38 , Kelly Rissman
“Well I don’t know what they would say. Laura’s been a supporter. Just like a lot of people are supporters. She speaks very positively of the campaign,” Trump said during a news conference at his Los Angeles golf resort on Friday evening. “I can’t tell Laura what to do. She’s a free spirit.”

Trump says there will be ‘large deportations from Springfield’
Friday 13 September 2024 19:35 , Gustaf Kilander
Trump said on Friday that his administration would conduct “large deportations from Springfield, Ohio.”
During the debate on Tuesday night, Trump falsely claimed that Haitian migrants were stealing and eating domestic pets in the city.
“They emptied their jails in Venezuela, emptied their criminals. Emptied the nests. They call them nests of bad people,” Trump claimed on Friday. “They’re all now in the United States, and they’re now taking over cities. It’s like an invasion from within. We’re going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country, and we’re going to start with Springfield and Aurora.”
A reporter noted that city officials in Springfield have all debunked the claims made about the town.
“The mayor of Springfield, Ohio, the police chief, the Republican governor of Ohio, have all debunked this story about people eating pets and now there are bomb threats at schools and kids being evacuated. Why do you still spread…” the reporter said.
“No, no, no,” Trump interrupted. “The real threat is what’s happening at our border because you have thousands of people being killed by illegal migrants coming in.”
