At halftime, Vikings defense allows 267 yards and trails Giants 17-14

The Minnesota Vikings began the Wild Card match against the New York Giants very strongly, but they faltered until the two minute warning. They go into halftime down.

The first drive was a meticulously planned 12-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a Kirk Cousins quarterback sneak. Although the offense appeared ready to play once Daniel Jones took the field, the defense was not.

The Giants torched the Vikings’ defense throughout the first half for 267 yards. The silver lining is the Vikings did get a stop on the Giants’ third possession which lasted 20 plays for 85 yards.

Jones has been torching the Vikings like he’s prime Aaron Rodgers. Jones ran 12-16 for 143 yards, a touchdown, and 10 carries for 7 yards. Jones needs to be protected like Rodgers by the Vikings. They must play coverage and rush Jones with contain to stop him from getting out of the pocket.

The defense looked pathetic and lost until the second half. They couldn’t get pressure, the secondary was falling down and tackling was suspect. Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell looked lost His play calling was flawless and there were only minor adjustments, until it felt too late.

The Giants have the ball to begin the second half. If the Vikings are to win, they must play better defense.
