Unfortunately for those living in the Midwest — defined as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin — most payouts came from states along the two coasts.

The majority of Midwestern states that made payouts in 2022 were successful. There are however two states in the Midwest that residents might be interested in. still be able to claim a last-minute inflation relief check.

Illinois

Illinois residents could be eligible for two separate payments from Illinois in 2023.

The first payment is an income tax rebate of $50 for single filers and $100 for joint filers. For eligibility, residents of Illinois must have an income tax rebate worth $50 per single filer or $100 for joint filers.

A property tax rebate up to $300 is the second payout. This is only for registered property owners. To be eligible, you must be an Illinois resident and have paid property taxes in 2021 for a primary residence that you purchased in 2020. To qualify, your adjusted gross must be lower than $250,000 or $500,000 for joint filers.

In fact, the rebates began in September 2022 and many Illinois residents have already received them. However, payments are continuing into 2023 for those who haven’t.

Indiana

Indiana began sending tax refunds worth $125 to qualifying singles and $250 for joint filers in May 2022. The income threshold was not met, but residents had to have filed their 2020 and 2021 Indiana tax returns.

The second round, which was $200 per taxpayer, began to be sent via direct deposit in August 2022. Taxpayers who received the $125 credit were automatically entitled to the $200 payment.

However, for state residents that only qualified for the $200 payout — rather than both — payments are still being withheld. The money will not be released to taxpayers if they file a 2022 return before January 1, 2024 and claim it on taxes.

Part of the reason for this extra step is that residents who did not qualify for the $125 credit must demonstrate that they are both receiving Social Security benefits and are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.

Midwestern States with No Inflation Relief Checks

While some Midwestern states such as Iowa didn’t get into the inflation relief game, others like Kansas did and they failed often because of legislative resistance.

Minnesota was one of few Midwestern states to have distributions. In this instance, $488 payments were made for frontline workers in 2022. But, those benefits are no longer available.
