What have QBs done? Who is available now?

The transfer portal can win or lose games, and any position has more impact than the quarterback.

Since the first transfer window opened on Dec. 5, we’ve seen a flurry of movement across college football with an array of high-profile quarterbacks committing to new schools.

If you’ve had trouble keeping track of everything, don’t fret. Below, we’ve recapped the most notable quarterback transfers from conference to conference and the top signal callers still available.

New team: (previous team)

AAC

  • Florida Atlantic: Daniel Richardson CMU

  • Houston: Donovan Smith, Texas Tech

  • North Texas: Chandler Rogers (UL Monroe)

  • Rice: JT. Daniels (West Virginia).

  • USF: Bryce Archie (Coastal Carolina)

  • UTSA Owen McCown (Colorado).

Smith has been a Texas Tech starter for two seasons and will now have the opportunity to take over from Clayton Tune, a long-time Houstonian. After his stops at USC (Georgia), West Virginia, and USC, Daniels has now moved on to his fourth school. Daniels will aid Rice transition to the AAC via Conference USA.

ACC

  • Clemson: Paul Tyson (Arizona State)

  • Georgia Tech: Haynes King (Texas A&M)

  • Louisville: Jack Plummer (Cal)

  • NC State: Brennan Armstrong (Virginia)

  • Pitt: Phil Jurkovec (Boston College).

  • Pitt: Christian Veilleux (Penn State)

  • Virginia: Tony Muskett (Monmouth)

  • Virginia Tech: Kyron Drones (Baylor)

Pitt was able, through commitments from Jurkovec as well as Veilleux, to add a new quarterback for next season and potentially its future quarterback. Jurkovec was a Notre Dame graduate before he started three seasons at Boston College. Veilleux was a former four-star recruit and was the Penn State third-stringer this season.

Plummer was drawn to Louisville because of his obvious connection. Plummer began his career at Purdue where he was a player for Jeff Brohm, the new UL head coach. After Malik Cunningham’s departure for the NFL, the Cardinals needed a new quarterback.

King won Texas A&M’s starting job out of preseason camp for the past two seasons and now gets a chance to jump-start his career at Georgia Tech.

Armstrong decided to remain with the ACC. He spent five seasons with Virginia, four of which were with Robert Anae, his offensive coordinator. Armstrong, who has thrown more than 9,000 yards over his career, was a natural match for Anae at NC State.

Big 12

  • Baylor: Sawyer Robertson, Mississippi State

  • BYU – Kedon Slovis (Pitt).

  • Cincinnati: Emory Jones (Arizona State)

  • Oklahoma State: Alan Bowman (Michigan)

Two experienced quarterbacks have been added to the Big 12 roster. After stops at USC, Pitt and BYU, Slovis is heading to BYU. Jones, who began his career at Florida, is now choosing Cincinnati to be his third school. He played at ASU in 2022.

Big Ten

  • Illinois: Luke Altmyer (Ole Miss)

  • Iowa: Cade McNamara Michigan

  • Nebraska: Jeff Sims (Georgia Tech)

  • Ohio State: Tristan Gebbia (Oregon State)

  • Purdue: Hudson Card (Texas)

  • Wisconsin: Nick Evers (Oklahoma)

  • Wisconsin: Braedyn Locke (Mississippi State)

  • Wisconsin: Tanner Mordecai SMU

Next season will see several new starters in Big Ten, including McNamara moving from Michigan to Iowa. New coach Luke Fickell has helped Wisconsin to quickly overhaul its quarterback room. As SMU’s starting quarterback, Mordecai threw more than 7,000 yards over two seasons. Evers and Locke were four-star recruits in 2022.

Ryan Walters could make Card a major hire. After being Texas’ backup, Walters appointed Graham Harrell to be the offensive coordinator. Card could make a great fit.

C-USA

Independent

  • New Mexico State: Eli Stowers (Texas A&M)

  • Notre Dame: Sam Hartman (Wake Forest)

  • UMass: Taisun Phommachanh (Georgia Tech)

Hartman was a Wake Forest player for five seasons, and played in 48 of his total games. In 2018, he was a true freshman and served as Jamie Newman’s backup in 2019. He then returned to the starting position the following three seasons. Hartman threw for 12,967 yard and 110 touchdowns during that time. Hartman was the undisputed No. He was arguably the No.1 available quarterback on transfer market.

MAC

  • Ball State: Layne Hatcher (Texas State).

  • Bowling Green: Connor Bazelak (Indiana)

  • Kent State: Jaren L. Lewis (Kansas State).

  • Miami: Maddox Kopp (Colorado)

Mountain West

  • Fresno State: Mikey Keene (UCF)

  • Nevada: Brendon Lewis (Colorado)

  • New Mexico: Dylan Hopkins (UAB)

  • Jay Butterfield (Oregon), San Jose State: Jay Butterfield

Fresno State is losing Jake Haener but adding Keene from UCF should lessen the blow caused by Haener’s absence. Keene was a Knights’ quarterback for two seasons, throwing for 2,377 yards with 23 touchdowns.

Hopkins threw for 4,750 yard and 31 touchdowns at UAB. He decided to follow Bryant Vincent to New Mexico. Vincent was UAB’s longtime offensive coordinator and served as interim head coach for the 2022 seasons. Vincent was replaced by Trent Dilfer, who took over as head coach.

Pac-12

  • Arizona State: Drew Pyne (Notre Dame)

  • Cal: Sam Jackson, TCU

  • Colorado: Shedeur Sanders (Jackson State)

  • Oregon State: DJ Uiagalelei (Clemson)

  • UCLA: Collin Schlee (Kent State)

There’s going to be a lot of really good quarterback play in the Pac-12 next season with guys like Caleb Williams (USC), Bo Nix (Oregon) and Michael Penix (Washington) all returning. This group of transfer players adds to the talent pool.

Pyne played most of Notre Dame’s season. Sanders followed his father Deion Sanders from Jackson State and Boulder to follow him. Uiagalelei is searching for a new start at Corvallis after being the starter at Clemson for two years. If Dante Moore, five-star freshman, isn’t ready to start immediately, Schlee could be a great addition for UCLA.

SEC

  • Arkansas: Jacolby Crswell (North Carolina).

  • Florida: Graham Mertz (Wisconsin)

  • Kentucky: Devin Leary (NC State).

  • Ole Miss: Walker Howard (LSU)

Florida will be without Anthony Richardson in 2023, as the NFL has hired him. Perhaps it will be Mertz, who had an up-and-down career at Wisconsin after being the top–rated quarterback recruit to ever sign with the Badgers.

Leary was a portal’s most desired QB. Leary was a part of the first four seasons of NC State’s football team and will now be taking over for Will Levis, a Kentucky quarterback who is bound for the NFL.

Howard, a five-star recruit from the 2022 class, chose to transfer over spending another season at LSU as the third-stringer. He’ll be competing to start at Ole Miss with Jaxson Dat.

Sun Belt

  • Georgia Southern: Davis Brin – Tulsa

  • James Madison: Brett Griffis (Wake Forest)

  • Texas State: Malik Hornsby. (Arkansas).

  • Troy: Will Crowder (West Virginia).

What transfer quarterbacks are available?

  • Hank Bachmeier (Boise State)

  • Braylon Braxton (Tulsa)

  • Jake Garcia (Miami).

  • Sam Huard (Washington).

  • Chance Nolan (Oregon State).

  • Spencer Sanders (Oklahoma State)

  • Mike Wright (Vanderbilt)

Sanders is the most prominent name on the board.

Sanders was a starter at Oklahoma State for four seasons and has 9,553 passing yards, 1,956 running yards and 85 total touchdowns.

Grayson McCall of Coastal Carolina, three-time Sun Belt Player Of The Year, initially entered the portal, but reportedly withdrew on New Year’s Day.

Huard was a 5-star recruit in 2021’s class, but was now looking for a third consecutive season to be a backup to Michael Penix Jr., who is returning to Washington for a second season.
