2022 was for most people the year they began to settle into their new normal. It was a place that resembled the past but was less intimidating and gave them the feeling of being in control. We began to identify which pandemic-inspired trends will be here to stay. So far, the top two have been. hybrid working and cooking from home), and which ones were short lived (who can forget the toilet paper hoarding and the large-scale migration to smaller towns at the beginning of the pandemic?).

Canada found a 30,000-year-old baby woolly Mammoth. We celebrated the reign of Britain’s longest-serving monarch and watched with fascination as NASA launched Artemis 1, the most powerful rocket to orbit, into space. There were also darker moments in 2022, such as the conflict in Ukraine and a sliding global economy.

It has been a busy year. As we enter the final weeks of 2022 we like to pause, take a deep breath, and reflect back on the past year. It’s impossible to shift our attention to the future without looking back at past events. Here are a few of our favorite Ericsson blog entries of the year.

Future of sports

Many sports fans saw 2022 as a huge year. It was all about summer sports, winter sports, and even a cricket frenzy. The technology revolution has transformed the world of sports. The latest technology is being applied to soccer balls, allowing them to relay their position 500 times per second. Big data insights are being used to transform players’ performance and blockchain is being used for fan engagement.

The powerful enabler that makes all of this possible is at the heart of everything. The 5G course.

What’s the point? It seems that we have the power to go as far as our imaginations will take us. Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s catchy tune sums it all. Smart stadiums offer personalized and real-time view of the action at live sports and allow players to visit our homes through virtual or augmented reality. you ain’t seen nothing yet.

AI and 5G: The happily ever-after continues

5G was not just another G. The potential of 5G is high. Expectations are high for performance, low latency, throughput, availability, and other aspects. This is a huge task that requires an equally powerful sidekick, which in 5G’s instance, is AI.

We saw this happy-ever-after couple continue to grow in 2022. This includes building future societies and simplifying the complex issues that 5G can bring. This power couple is just the beginning. As network slicing technology and intent-based operations become more common, advanced techniques will continue developing to meet our complex future.

Ericsson will become Net Zero by 2040 to tackle the climate challenge

Only a glance at headlines from 2022 will show that the time we have left to create a sustainable future and livable planet is rapidly diminishing. Net Zero at a global level is crucial and requires a collective societal effort. A series of butterfly effects, where no act will fail, is required.

The ICT sector has a major role to play. First, by rapidly decarbonizing the sector. Second, by empowering other sectors through technological innovations and collaboration to create their own Net Zero futures. Ericsson has learned valuable lessons from its journey to Net Zero throughout its entire value chain by 2040.

Check out the following post: Net Zero: what does it mean and how do we get there?

Time-to-content is the core of smartphone user experience (for right now).

How long do I have until my video starts playing after I click? It’s also called time-to content and is how mobile users continue to evaluate their experience. Although latency is a key enabler, peak download speed and latency are less important than human performance. This is why video-controlled robots with high-precision are used in smart factories that have extremely low and reliable latencies.

But, this won’t be the case for ever. As 5G applications such as virtual reality and augmented reality become more common, users of the future will soon understand the connection between latency and download speed and great experiences.

Reducing the digital divide

In 2022, digitalization was a powerful enabler of social integration and a global engine for sustainable economic growth. Borje Ekholm (our CEO) highlighted the importance of universal connectivity and expanding digital access to small businesses to G20 leaders during this year’s B20 summit, Bali, Indonesia.

He has been co-chairman for three years of the Digitalization Taskforce (B20) and explores policy recommendations and the enormous potential of a global community that is universally connected, digitally proficient, and fully empowered.

Entertainment meets XR

Recent years have seen a dramatic shift in our attitudes toward entertainment. The entertainment industry is constantly evolving and innovating as our attention spans shrink and our expectations grow. The pandemic served as a wake-up call to the potential and limitations of a world based on screens.

We are now seeing immersive media formats and the metaverse as two of today’s most important game changers. These two trends will transform the online world into an extension of our daily lives and end the era where we are glued to our phones.

The 5G key: Unlocking all the potential of the metaverse

Since its original definition in 1997, the metaverse has seen a lot of progress. 1992. Although it can mean many things today, the majority of definitions agree on three key points: It includes a social element, has strong virtual narratives, and is accelerated using novel technologies like AI and blockchain to name a few.

5G is the key to its success. It will enable exciting uses such as metaverse VR or metaverse XR, and also make Web 3.0 a closer reality.

Storytelling to story-living

We all remember at least one popup book from childhood. It was a complex combination superhuman folding techniques, strategically placed glue dots, and intricate cutouts to transform one-dimensional pages into 3D objects of fascination. The world of storytelling is about to get so immersive it will be hard to tell what is real and fake.

Augmented Reality, Edge, and 5G are essential to our imaginations. They will change the way we tell and experience stories, as well as how historical events are portrayed and all other stories.

Check out the following post: Bringing stories to life through immersive AR.

Future realities

What does the metaverse really mean for humanity? What is the world creating? What human skills will we need for Web 3.0?

Zeljka Sotra (leader of Ericsson’s Customer Product Information) department discovered that VR could just reveal the complexity of being human. It might even help us to understand each other better.

Check out the following post: Meeting the grandfather of VR in the metaverse.

Finale: A futuristic 6G sneak peek

The 2022 roundup would not be complete without a glimpse into the future. The Internet of Senses, Connected Intelligent Machines, Programmable Physical Worlds, and a Connected Sustainability World will all be possible with 6G. Learn more about the bright future for connectivity, as well as the challenges that our industry will face.
