49ers to receive compensatory 3rd round pick after Titans hire Ran Carthon

Ran Carthon, the 49ers director for player personnel, will be the Titans’ new general manager. ESPN’s Dianna Russini was the first to report the move.

Carthon has been in the 49ers’ front office since 2017, and moved to the director of player personnel role two seasons ago.

His move to a GM job will land the 49ers another compensatory third-round pick as part of the NFL’s expanded Rooney Rule that aims to incentivize teams to groom minority head coach and GM candidates.

Carthon is fourth such candidate who was hired out of San Francisco. Mike McDaniel, Robert Saleh, and Mike McDaniel were hired by the Jets to serve as head coaches. Martin Mayhew was hired out of a VP of player personnel role with the 49ers to be Washington’s GM.
