But, savvy shoppers can get bargains on travel to certain destinations. According to InsureMyTrip, Honduras is the best place to travel this year. It costs $3,858 per person for a non-refundable, pre-paid trip. At $22,719 per person, Antarctica is the most expensive.

The figures are based on the past six months of travel insurance data and cover the costs for transportation, accommodations, flights, and more, per Meghan Walch, director of product for InsureMyTrip.

What are some of the best places to see — and things to do — in the top five low-cost international vacation spots? What is the cost of the trip?

Honduras ($3,858)

InsureMyTrip lists a vacation in Honduras as $3,858, an average. A trip to the country’s Bay Islands can bring you encounters with dolphins or whale sharks, birdwatching adventures, scuba diving and more. You can relax at the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum or the Butterfly Gardens on Roatan for a more laid-back day.

Dominican Republic ($4,143).

The Dominican Republic is a popular destination for American tourists. It offers beautiful white beaches, vibrant nightlife, and many family activities. An all-inclusive resort at Punta Cana might help you keep your expenses in check while on vacation. But be aware of what’s included — and what’s not — in your vacation package to help control costs.

Aruba ($4,466)

You wouldn’t be wrong to surmise that the Caribbean is one of the most affordable destinations for a tropical vacation, and Aruba is a top choice for many travelers. LonelyPlanet suggests that fall is the most affordable time to visit. However, you can also find deals in May, June and April if you book well in advance.

Bahamas ($4,472)

The Bahamas is located southeast of Florida and is easy to reach for U.S. visitors. It offers many all-inclusive resorts as well as other travel deals, just like other Caribbean islands. The country’s capital of Nassau is recognized as a party hot spot, while Harbour Island is hailed as a haven for celebrities. The ferry ride between the islands takes less than two hours. If you’re looking for relaxing beaches and a family-friendly resort, consider Atlantis on Paradise Island.

Puerto Rico ($4,668)

Adventure-seekers may want to take a spring break in Puerto Rico, as it is a great place for a cheap getaway. Old San Juan has a rich history and exceptional local cuisine. Discover Puerto Rico says the El Yunque Rainforest has many options for sightseeing, hiking, and ziplining. Don’t forget to leave time to soak up the sun on the island’s beaches.

Why It’s Wise To Purchase Trip or Travel Insurance

Wherever you choose to go, it’s wise to insure your trip, according to Walch. “Travel insurance can help provide reimbursement for unexpected issues while traveling,” she said. This includes flight delays that are more common in recent months. It also covers illness and injuries sustained while abroad. “Most domestic health insurance policies will not cover medical bills overseas,” Walch advised.

Be aware that not all policies are the same. A comprehensive plan will provide coverage for most contingencies. This includes trip cancellation, baggage interruption, baggage, medical, and dental evacuations, as well as 24-hour traveler assistance, accidental death, and emergency evacuations.

You might not be covered, depending on the reason. Walch recommended “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage if you want the freedom to cancel regardless of the reason. “If you qualify for this coverage, CFAR can help to reimburse you up to 75% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” Walch said.

The cost of travel insurance can increase by anywhere from 4% to 10%. Other options include booking refundable lodgings and travel insurance. You may also be able to rely on travel insurance coverage offered by travel rewards credit card. If you use the credit card to purchase the entire trip, some parts may not be covered. Credit card companies do not usually offer travel insurance that is tailored to your specific needs.

A domestic trip may require only flight cancellation and lost luggage insurance. However, a long-distance journey may require a comprehensive plan.

“Every traveler is different,” Walch said. “We work to help you find the right coverage to address all your concerns.”
