The Pirates, who haven’t made the playoffs since 2015, have been one of baseball’s top early-season stories thus far. The Pirates have had a great start to the season, despite having two straight 100-loss seasons. They excel at both scoring and preventing.

The rotation’s early success has been a pleasant surprise. They entered Sunday ranked 10th and second in majors for ERA, as well as innings pitched. Johan Oviedo, a rookie pitcher with a 2.22 ERA in four starts and 25 strikeouts, is a major reason for this success.

Generating offence has also come easily thanks to the return of franchise icon Andrew McCutchen, who’s hitting .277/.388 /.523 with four home runs, 11 RBIs and a 144 wRC+ over 19 games in his 10th season with the Buccos across two stints.
