Al Brown, Commissioner Stan Valchek in The Wire, Dead at the 83

Al Brown, best known for his role on HBO’s The Wire as Baltimore Police Commissioner Stanislaus “Stan” Valchek, has died after a battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 83.

Brown’s daughter confirmed the news to TMZ.

Brown’s character recurred in all five seasons of The WireFrom 2002-2008, the series aired on HBO. This critically-acclaimed drama focused on the relationship between different Baltimore institutions and law enforcement. Each season focuses on a different institution: illegal drug trades, the port system and city government and bureaucracy.

Brown appeared most prominently in the second season which focused on the city’s ports. His character was suspected of corruption and drug smuggling among dock workers at the ports. Valchek was taken into police custody in dramatic scenes.

The actor began his career in the ’90s. His roles included the following: Rescue Me, Law & Order: SVU, Commander in Chief, Maron, The Hustler The 2004 TV movie, entitled Something that the Lord MadeAmong others. He appeared in a number of films, including the role of “The Man Who Could” The Replacements, Red Dragons, Liberty Heights, 12 Monkeys and Lay the Favorite More.

Prior to his acting, he spent 29 years in the Air Force including two tours in Vietnam.
