Alex Grinch’s 2023 restoration project with USC defense must begin in the Cotton Bowl

It is evident that the USC Trojans are pleased with Alex Grinch’s offer to coach the defense in 2023. Grinch was not fired by the Trojans in December. They would have made Grinch their star in December if they were dissatisfied with his performance in 2022.

This is completely reasonable. We all knew Grinch did not have the depth or the bodies needed to make USC’s defense elite. This was the area USC was most likely not to make it to the College Football Playoff. It’s not as though this came as a revelation or a surprise to USC fans or national college football observers. This was a well-known fact going into the season. Grinch wasn’t spectacular this year, but he wasn’t bad, either.

But, this is where things get interesting.

Grinch didn’t have what he needed in Year 1, but in Year 2, the standard has to be higher, period. Mason Cobb and other transfers will raise the bar. USC can’t be in the same position next year. The Cotton Bowl is the place where the USC defense improvement project begins. We’ll see how Grinch responds to the challenges he faces.
