SINGAPORE — What a difference four months make. Manchester United fans were in despair in September after witnessing their club fall to a 0-4 defeat at Brentford.

After finishing sixth in the previous tournament, Erik ten Hag became the manager of the dysfunctional squad. It seemed that little had changed. English Premier League (EPL) season.

If they win Crystal Palace’s midweek match, Man United will be able to overtake Manchester City as second in the league table. After a five-match win streak, they looked just like the United of old: disciplined, flexible, and full of passion.

Man United have started to take a charge for the EPL title that many neutrals could not have anticipated at the start.

Bit by bit, ten Hag has revived the squad through savvy transfers that brought in Casemiro Martinez, Lisandro Martinez, and Cristian Eriksen. He also promoted top young talent like Alejandro Garnacho or Anthony Elanga.

Most importantly, he added through subtraction. Letting go of Cristiano Rojo has undoubtedly been the greatest boost to the squad’s performance. It’s no surprise that they haven’t dropped a point since the Portuguese superstar gave his explosive interview praising the club.

Ronaldo’s departure has meant that ten Hag is the only person who can implement his progressive football ideas in the United squad. His coaching has had a positive impact on their performance, with leaps-and-bounds improvements.

After being ridiculed in the last few seasons, Fred, Luke Shaw, and Marcus Rashford have all been doing well. The new signings have given Old Trafford renewed hope after years of poor performance following Sir Alex Ferugson’s retirement.

Can they win the EPL title in ten Hag’s first season? This would seem impossible for most United fans, but Man United might be able to take advantage of a season in which many top teams are struggling to form. Man City, Liverpool, and Chelsea are all far from their best.
