Canadian actress Devery Jacobs knocks ‘harmful misinformation’ about RCMP

Indigenous Canadian actress and writer Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs, known professionally as Devery Jacobs, called out the American game show Jeopardy! Spread misinformation on Monday

The clue to the game show suggested that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was established to remove whiskey traders from the United States.

Devery Jacobs, however, criticized the show and stated that the RCMP was created to “control the sovereignty of Indigenous people” and not protect communities.

Both are actually true.

According to Britannica, the RCMP, formerly known as the North West Mounted Police at its time of creation, was created for both reasons—to deal with the whiskey traders from the United States and to “pacify” Indigenous Peoples and maintain order in the new Canadian Northwest Territories.

According to the webpage, “The original force of 300 men was sent by the United States to deal against traders who traded cheap whiskey for buffalo skins.”

But, it is also true to say that the Canadian paramilitary force police force was created to keep order after Rupert’s Land was transferred to Canada in 1870 from the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Sir John A. Macdonald became Canada’s first Prime minister. The Mounties were modeled after the Royal Irish Constabulary which was a paramilitary force created by the British to keep the Irish under control.

Interview with the Global News history lecturer Steve Hewitt said The job of the Mounties was “clear the Prairies, the Plains, and of Indigenous People” as well as to move Indigenous people.

Historical commentators have often described the mounted police’s approach as ranging from “benevolent dictatorship” to “legal oppression”. The police—sometimes forcefully—tried to apply Canadian law to First Nations.

The federal government introduced the Indian Act and used Mounties to forcibly remove Indigenous children from their homes. They then moved them onto reserves.
