Canadians praise Girl Guides after their swift name change from “Brownies” to “Embers” in the face of racial backlash

The Girl Guides of Canada has announced the new name of their branch for seven- and eight-year-old participants. This move was done with the intent of being more inclusive.

It was decided that the Comets and Embers were the best choices after putting up two possible new titles for their members.

“Embers may be small, but they’re full of potential and when they work together, they can ignite a powerful flame,” The Girl Guides of Canada wrote on a social media post, announcing the change.

The unit was formerly known as “Brownies”, which some felt was discriminatory and harmful towards racialized members. The organization met with former and current racialized members to decide on a new name.

“We have heard from racialized girls that this name has caused them harm,” the organization wrote on social media back in November. “We cannot cause harm to any girls, so we are taking action to create a place where all girls belong.”

Online, many celebrated the announcement and praised the organization for their concern for the well-being of their members.

Some weren’t aware of the negative implications that the previous name had on the group.

Some people weren’t impressed by the choice.

Some people were curious about how embers work.

The official transition to the new name will take place on September 1st. Parents seeking guidance on the name change process can read more about it here.
