Carl Weathers Super Bowl Spot Adds Tribute in Wake of Actor’s Death — WATCH

A FanDuel commercial featuring Carl Weathers that aired on Super Bowl Sunday was adjusted in the wake of the actor’s death, with the addition of a “Thank You, Carl” end card.

In FanDuel’s first “Kick of Destiny” spot that aired during last year’s Super Bowl contest between the Chiefs and Eagles, NFL vet Rob Gronkowski attempted to kick a field goal to give fans who’d made a bet on FanDuel’s Sportsbook a chance to collectively win $10 million. (In a segment that aired live that Super Bowl Sunday, Gronk’s kick missed/sailed wide to the left.)

In this year’s “Kick of Destiny 2,” Rocky franchise icon Weathers shows up to motivate a despondent Gronkowski and coach him towards a second chance success — precisely as his Apollo Creed character did with Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky “The Italian Stallion” Balboa in Rocky III.

Watch the original teaser for the Super Bowl spot above, and the actual, adjusted ad below:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Weathers,” the company said in a statement following the actor’s passing. “Throughout his life, Carl was an iconic talent who had a profound impact on the people he worked with on and off the screen. FanDuel was fortunate to have had an opportunity to work with him during our Super Bowl campaign. We are adjusting our campaign accordingly out of respect for the family during their time of grief.”

The star of Rocky films and of course TV’s The Mandalorian, Weathers died peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 1. ” Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life,” his family said in a statement. “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
