Clemson seeks to hire Garrett Riley from TCU as OC

Clemson wants to hire TCU assistant Garrett Riley to be its next offensive coordinator. A person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press Thursday.

Because a deal was still being completed and required approval by the school’s Board of Trustees, the person spoke under anonymity.

The compensation committee of the board had scheduled a meeting for Friday. One item was on the agenda: A contract for football assistant coach, with Graham Neff as athletic director.

After board approval, no official announcements can be made.

Tiger Illustrated first reported that Clemson had selected Riley to be its next offensive coordinator.

Dabo Swinney, Tigers’ coach, announced Thursday that Brandon Streeter will not be returning as offensive coordinator. Streeter was a long-time staff member and was promoted to offensive coordination after last season.

Tony Elliott left Clemson in order to be head coach at Virginia, and Streeter took his place.

Clemson’s offensive performance has been poor the past two seasons. The Tigers (11-3), which finished last in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s yards per play in 2021 (5.17), improved to eighth in 2022 (5.60), and won the conference.

Riley, the 33 year-old brother of Southern California coach Lincoln Riley was instrumental in leading TCU (13-2) into its first playoff appearance.

He was accompanied by Sonny Dykes, the Horned Frogs’ first-year coach. TCU ranked 14th nationally in yards per played at 6.69, and was the leader in the country with 22 plays at least 50 yards.

Riley served as the offensive coordinator at SMU for two seasons under Dykes.
