Seminoles win with Cleveland’s eighth double-double in a row

SOUTH END, Ind. (AP) — Matthew Cleveland had 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for his eighth straight double-double and Florida State led all the way in an 84-71 victory over Notre Dame on Tuesday night.

Florida State was led by Darin Green Jr. (6-13, 4-4 ACC), with 20 points. That’s 15 more than the first half. Jalen Warley scored 17 points, Caleb Mills 11, and Cameron Corhen 10.

Marcus Hammond made five 3-pointers, and Notre Dame scored 19 points, a record for the season. Notre Dame has lost six of its last seven games. Trey Wertz had 15 points, JJStarling 12, and Dane Goodwin added 11.

The Seminoles led 24 to nine minutes. But the Fighting Irish got Wertz three straight baskets to begin a 16-1 run. They eventually closed the game within six. The Seminoles managed to make 13 of 16 free shots in the final 2 1/2 minute.

While the Seminoles were hitting 11 of their first 14 shots and scoring the game’s first 13 points, the Irish started 0-for-7. An 8-0 run expanded the lead to 24 before the Irish bounced back with a 21-3 run — Hammond hitting a pair of 3-pointers — and ended the half trailing 39-29.

Florida State shot 51%, Notre Dame 39%. They managed to score an average of nine threes per game for the Irish, but only 32 times. Seminoles won the board by a score of 42 to 29.

The Seminoles defeated the Irish by 73 to 72 last month. They have won six of seven previous meetings.

Florida State is next at Pittsburgh. Notre Dame is hosting Boston College. Both games are on Saturday.
