Complaint against George Santos, New Representative Alleges That His Campaign Told About the ‘True Source’ of Its Finance

Monday’s federal complaint alleges that “unknown persons or corporations may have illegally channeled money” to the controversial Rep. George Santos He has been the focus of several headlines since he admitted to lying about large amounts of his past.

The nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center filed the complaint and it was published by The Washington PostAccording to Santos, he appears to have lied about his campaign’s fundraising and spending of money as well as lying about his personal life.

Many of Santos’ lies were uncovered during an investigation By The New York Times December 19, when the outlet discovered that significant parts of his past were missing that could not be verified.

Santos admits to making some errors, but many questions remain. regarding his finances remain unanswered.

Santos declared in a financial disclosure that, at the time of his first attempt to run for the House in 2020 he had no assets nor earned income. His financial situation looked to have significantly improved by the time that he decided to run for the House again in 2022. Federal Election Commission filings show that he had lent at most $580,000 to his campaign and $27,000 to the political action committee.

According to the Campaign Legal Center, Santos has “appears” to have violated federal campaign finance law by “knowingly and willingly concealing the true source of his campaign funding, misrepresenting how his campaign spent it money, and illegally paying personal expenses with campaign funds.”

Further, the complaint notes that Santos’ claims to have earned millions of dollars in 2021 from a business he started May 2021, are “vague, noncorroborated and non-credible, given his many lies.”

The Campaign Legal Center claims that Santos committed a variety of campaign finance violations. These include using campaign resources to pay personal expenses such as rent, and falsifying the disclosure of daily campaign expenses.

The complaint cites campaign financial disclosures and claims that Santos reported a variety of “implausible expenses”, including “37 disbursements” Just what it says $199.99″ — just under the $200 threshold requiring a receipt.

One of the $199.99 expenses was a hotel reservation at W Hotel South Beach. These rooms are regularly more than $700 per person. According to the complaint, “Simply put, except for some type of private insider fee that would raise other serious violations in campaign finance law,” Santos could not have paid $199.99 per night for a Hotel Stay’ at W Hotel South Beach.

The complaint alleges that Santos served as a “strawdon” for illegal donations to his campaign. It raises questions about the identity of those who made the contributions.

The complaint states that Santos’s sudden increase in income and assets, as well as the absence of any explanation about how it happened, his well-documented penchant to dishonesty and the fact that he used $705,000 of his sudden wealth to pay for his congressional campaign strongly suggest that this rapid shift in Santos’s finances was not just a coincidence. It was the result of unknown individuals directly and illegally giving him money to run to federal office.
