SAM M. LONIELLO

During Thursday’s court proceedings, a peculiar case of robbery was made public.

Nikki Gibson, a resident of Goshen, reported to Goshen Police that she was being treated for a knee injury at Goshen Hospital and that she was having difficulty getting a ride home. Gibson posted requesting help on Facebook. Someone responded. According to court documents, the person she was picked up was 33-year-old Sam Loniello from Niles in Michigan. It drove what she believed to be a lime green Toyota Prius. His real name was unknown at that time. According to the charging statement, the man pulled into the postoffice and requested a sexual act while on his way home. Gibson refused to do so and slapped her about 15 times. The driver then took Gibson’s purse before she got out of the car. It contained two cellphones, $300 cash and a Cash App debit/card. He also had her driver’s licence, prescription, and driver license.

In the affidavit officers stated that they were unable to identify a suspect before Gibson received a text message asking for help. Gibson requested a photograph and was confirmed to be the same person as the assault and robbery. Loniello was the only occupant of the vehicle when an officer arrived at Lassus, 1001 W. Pike St.

Loniello claimed to police that Loniello had never asked for sexual favors. However, she said that Loniello assaulted her while driving in the car. The affidavit states that Loniello pulled over after she scratched him. Loniello also claimed that she got out the car and took his phone, as well as some fake money, to reaffirm that he had not hit her.

According to Loniello’s affidavit, he also claimed that he had been in touch with the woman about meeting at the gas station. He said that he sent photos of himself to her when she asked. However, the messages asking for sex were not from him. Loniello added that he was not sending them through an app or his phone but rather through 4-Chain.

Loniello told officers that he only seemed interested in discussing the sex trading ring going on. He said that he knew specific places in Michiana where it was operating and that he was always faithful to his wife. Laura Loniello, Loniello’s spouse, was also interviewed by officers. She said that Loniello had left the house in the middle of the evening but did not know where he went. Loniello also claimed that he didn’t have any purses.

Loniello has been charged with one count for robbery. Christofeno met Loniello in Circuit Court Thursday for a pre-trial conference. Attorney Michael Banik requested discovery after he entered the case on Dec. 29. A trial status conference is set for May 25, and a jury trial is scheduled for June 19.
