Greta Thunberg detained at German coal protest

Greta Thunberg is a climate activist. She was arrested by police outside a village in western Germany.

She had been protesting with activists seeking to stop the abandoned village of Lützerath from being demolished for the expansion of a coal mine.

Police claimed that Ms Thunberg was part a group who “rushed towards the ledge of the Garzweiler2 mine.”

It is unclear what will happen to the activist, or the group with which she was arrested.

The Garzweiler 2 mine is around 5.6 miles (9km) from Lützerath, and video from the scene showed three officers carrying Ms Thunberg from the protest as she smiled.

Reuters was also told by police that one man jumped into a mine.

Activists say burning coal weakens Germany’s efforts reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The country has pledged to eliminate coal-fired electricity by 2030.

Lützerath is expected to be the final village to be demolished for the lignite mine.

The protest organizers stated that around 35,000 protesters showed up on Saturday. Police, however, said that it was closer to 15,000.
