How to help victims of the Turkey and Syria earthquakes
On Monday, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Turkey And northern Syria. Soon afterward, another 7.5-magnitude earthquake ripped through the region. There were a number of aftershocks that caused more destruction. The earthquakes reduced concrete buildings to rubble and destroyed homes. The death toll stands at a staggering number of thousands. This is expected to increase as local rescue teams work to reach those buried under the rubble. Many of the areas hardest hit had already been impacted by Syria’s decade-long civil war.
Although aid is beginning to arrive, the blockages and collapsed roads are preventing recovery efforts from being successful. For this week, there are forecasted strong winds, freezing temperatures, snow, and rain, adding to the problem. “It’s now a race against time. Every minute, every hour that passes, the chances of finding survivors alive diminishes,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization told the Wall Street Journal.
