Leipzig’s Werner doesn’t regret Chelsea move

Timo Werner, RB Leipzig striker said Wednesday that he doesn’t regret his decision to move to Chelsea instead of German giants Bayern Munich.

Prior to Leipzig’s match against table-top Bayern on Friday, Werner, who won the 2021 Champions League together with Chelsea, told Germany’s Sportbild that he believes the right path is always the best one.

Werner was reported to have moved to Chelsea in 2020, paying 53 million Euros. Werner is one of Europe’s most sought after striking prospects. In 2019-20, Werner scored 34 times and received 13 assists in 45 fixtures against Leipzig.

Werner had opted for Chelsea ahead of Bayern,  but spent two unhappy seasons in London before returning to Leipzig last August.

“Up until now I would have had at Bayern two coaches who would be very good for my: Hansi Flick with whom I get on well and Julian Nagelsmann, my ex-coach at RB.

“But it’s a better decision not to regret it.”

Werner was only able to score ten goals in 56 league games with Chelsea, and was then benched by Thomas Tuchel for most of his second season.

“I was not part of the coach’s plan anymore. It is important to understand that you are not part of the coach’s plan and to find a solution.

Werner stated that he would give advice to Christopher Nkunku, his teammate in the Bundesliga and the top goalscorer with 12 goals in 15 games this term, on the possible pitfalls at Chelsea if he moves there, as widely rumoured.

“I can tell him both positive and bad experiences, should he wish to make the changes.”

“At a club such as this (Chelsea), there is more competition so you don’t play the same way at RB Leipzig.

“(That’s not) just on a sport level, but also mentally.”

Werner, who missed out on the World Cup due a torn ligament said that he was “ready for return against Bayern” Friday.

Werner was last Saturday’s first appearance since November 2. He played in a friendly win of 4-0 over Mlada Boleslav, Czech side.

“It was important to me that I play again after the injury, even though my foot wasn’t 100%. After such a long absence, I could feel my foot a little bit.”

Werner stated that Leipzig, who are third in table and six points behind Bayern, were “on an equal footing in terms our quality” with league leaders.

“We don’t even understand what we are made of. We can do so much more.”
