Maxwell scores 6 3s, No. 12 Gonzaga women defeat Portland 73-66

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Brynna Maxwell hit 7 of 10 from the field — 6 of 7 from 3-point range — and finished with 20 points to help No. 20 Gonzaga defeated Portland 73 to 66 Saturday night. This was the Pilots’ first loss in West Coast Conference play.

Esther Little scored 12 points for Gonzaga (7-2, 7-0). She also had nine rebounds, three steals, and five assists. Kaylynne Truong scored 12 points, while Yvonne Ejim had 10

Portland’s Haylee Andrews was the star (12-6, 6-1) and scored 27 points on 10-of-14 shots. Alex Fowler had 19 points and five assists.

The Pilots saw their seven-game win streak ended.

Maxwell scored a 3-pointer that made it 36-all at the half and Gonzaga never trailed again. In the second quarter, Maxwell made two more 3s and added a 3-pointer in the last 95 seconds. Truong scored a 3 with just 1:48 remaining.

The Bulldogs made five Portland turnovers within the first six minutes. They outscored the Pilots 16-6, taking a 14 point lead. Calli Stokes converted Calli Stokes’ three-point play with just 3:57 left.

Gonzaga shot 52% (32 of 61) from the field and scored 31 points off 23 Portland turnovers — including 13 Bulldogs steals.
