Nick Kyrgios revealed the moment when his mental health was at its lowest point, while his career was on the rise.

The 27-year old tennis star spoke out about his “internal struggles”. He was a heavy drinker and used drugs, and also suffered from depression and self-harm.

The Australians told The Sunday Times Magazine that his worst period – during which he’d considered suicide – came between the ages of 22 and 24.

He stated, “That’s frightening for me because while someone may seem to be in control of the world around them, you don’t really understand their internal struggles.”

Kyrgios, who finished second in the Wimbledon men’s finals last year, remembered how he used ingest between 20-30 alcoholic drinks per evening.

He also said that he would sometimes party late at night and take drugs before matches.

He stated, “I didn’t have anyone to share with and every time it was like, “Oh, you’ve got to just push through it.”

“It was that constant pushing through and being misunderstood. Today, I don’t try and be someone I’m not. Back then, I tried to keep in the same lane they wanted me to go.

Kyrgios – who features in the new Netflix series Break Point – revealed that seeing his family so upset at his struggles prompted him to seek psychological help.

He now manages his well-being by abstaining from drugs and drinking as little alcohol as possible, while also taking time out of tennis when necessary.

He stated, “I cannot hide in a place.” “I just need to see that this is my reality and embrace it more.”
