No. No. 12 Iowa State wins over No. 7 Texas, win with 78-67

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jaren Holmes scored 21 points and No. 12 Iowa State defeated No. 7 Texas beat No. 12 Iowa State by 78 to 67 on Tuesday night.

Holmes hit seven of 13 shots including two 3-pointers. Gabe Kalscheur added sixteen points.

Caleb Grill added 17 while Osun Osunniyi had 11 points and seven rebounds. The Cyclones were 14-3 and 5-1 Big 12.

Texas (25-3, 4-2), was wiped out by a second-half drought that lasted almost 4 1/2 minutes. Iowa State responded with an 8-1 run to take control.

The Longhorns were 9 1/2 without taking a shot from the floor.

Grill’s 3-pointer gave the Cyclones an advantage of 64 to 55 with just 6:01 left.

Texas’ Christian Bishop was the star with 12 points.

In his return from Iowa State, Tyrese Hunt scored 10 points for the Longhorns. Hunter received boos from the student section and was occasionally accosted with obscenities.

He replied quickly with six points, matching his score from his three previous games.

The Longhorns led by 29-18, but Iowa State responded with 10-0 runs, sparked in part by 3-pointers from Kalscheur & Grill.

Texas led 36-35 after the final 7 minutes of the first period, despite not scoring a field goal in the final 728.

BIG PICTURE

With Tuesday’s win by Iowa State, the Big 12 standings are tied at three with the win. The Jayhawks’ first conference loss was handed by Kansas, which suffered an 83-82 overtime defeat at Kansas State.

On Saturday, West Virginia plays Texas.
