Trump criticisms shape the legacy of Sen. Sasse, outgoing Senator

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s outgoing U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse knows he may be remembered more for his criticisms of former President Donald Trump than for the policies he supported during his eight years in office.

Sasse spoke with Sasse about his political legacy. the Omaha World-Herald As he was preparing to leave the Senate Sunday To become president of the University of Florida.

Sasse was a vocal Trump critic and voted with a few other Republicans to impeach the former president in his trial for the 2021 Capitol Riot. Despite being a Nebraska Republican, Sasse was sharply criticized for his criticisms.

Sasse acknowledged that Trump’s complex relationship will influence his legacy.

“I’m just sad for him as a human because obviously there’s a lot of complicated stuff going on in that soul,” Sasse said to the newspaper. “Just at a human level, I’m sad for him to be that needy and desperate. At a policy level, however, I love that he kept his word about the judges. … And so we got to work closely on judges.”

Sasse expressed pride in his work with Senate Intelligence committee which included the creation of a cybersecurity commission. He claimed that 120 of the 190 recommendations were passed by Congress.

The University of Florida job will allow Sasse — who studied American history at Harvard, Yale and Oxford — to return to academia at a much bigger institution. Sasse previously led the Midland University in Fremont (Nebraska), before he was elected as senator.

Sasse stated that he could not resist the opportunity to lead one the largest public universities in the country, despite being rejected by other universities in the past.

“South Florida is like a giant blank canvas,” Sasse said. “And so I’m very excited about a lot of the new stuff that we’re going to build.”

The governor has been elected. Jim Pillen will choose Sasse’s successor, and the leading candidate For the job, former Gov. After term limits prevented Pete Ricketts from running again, Pillen took over the role of Governor.
