Packers add impressive edge rusher in Todd McShay’s first mock draft of 2023

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay just published his first mock draft He was the most recent NFL Draft participant in the 2023 cycle. Green Bay Packers With the 14th overall selection, Myles Murphy, a Clemson edge rusher, was selected.

McShay

“The Packers took a step backward this season and have a bunch of needs, including safety, receiver, offensive line, tight end, and edge rusher. I’m going best available in Murphy, my No. 8 prospect. He brings burst, power, and bend off the edge, and he’d prove versatile in Green Bay’s scheme. Rashan Gary will be returning from a torn ACL. The Packers managed just 24 sacks last season (tied for 26th). Murphy has the tools to be a force in the NFL.”

Murphy at No. Brian Gutekunst would call 14 highway robbery. Clemson’s edge rusher is the third best player (non-quarterback), in the 2023 NFL Draft. Murphy is behind only Alabama’s Will Anderson and Georgia’s Jalen Carter on my board.

Murphy has had 36 tackles for losses and 18.5 sacks over the last three seasons. Murphy also recorded 11 tackles and 6.5 sacks in this past season.

Murphy is 6-5, 275 lbs and has long arms. He’s a strong run defender and has proven to be a disruptive force, consistently making plays behind the line of scrimmage. Murphy has a lot to offer and is very strong at the point. The Clemson prospect is able to chase down ball carriers with good range. His hair looks like it’s on fire.

Murphy is a pass rusher who can take a quick step and turn speed into power. The Clemson edge rusher has a devastating bullrush where his power overwhelms offensive linemen and he’s able to walk them back into the quarterback’s lap.

Quality pass rushers are a must for any team. The Packers should draft at least two of them in the upcoming draft.

Rashan Gary might not be ready to go for the 2023 season opening after suffering an ACL tear on Nov. 6. Preston Smith isn’t getting any younger. While Kingsley Enagbare has been a valuable addition to the rotation’s roster, is he a long-term starter or just a temporary one?

By adding Murphy the Packers would be getting an edge rusher that could help shore up Green Bay’s run defense, while also providing a Nick Perry-Esque impact as a pass rusher during his rookie season.

For the NFC North offensive tackles, Murphy and Gary could make a problematic pass-rushing team at 1265 Lombardi Avenue.
