Paopao is No. 21 Oregon women win over Washington 65-58

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Te-Hina Paopao finished with 16 points and five assists and No. Washington beat 21 Oregon 65-58 on Friday evening.

Paopao hit 6 of 10 3-pointers and two 3-pointers in favor of the Ducks (13-4 Pac-12 Conference, 4-2 Pac-12 Conference). Taya Hanson hit all four 3-pointers she attempted and got 15 points off the bench. Grace VanSlooten contributed 13 points and seven boards.

Haley Van Dyke and Delayah Danis each scored 14 for the Huskies (9-6-1), who have lost five out of their six previous games. Lauren Schwartz scored 10 points and made Washington’s two only 3-pointers. Jayda Noble scored six points, seven rebounds, and four of the 11 team steals.

Oregon shot poorly in the first half — 37% overall and 25% from 3-point range — but still led 29-21 at intermission.

Van Dyke and Daniels combined to score the Huskies’ first 10 points in the third quarter. Daniels’ layup brought the score down to 31 with just 6:14 left. VanSlooten replied with a three-point play. Hanson hit two 3-pointers. Oregon was leading 45-39 at the end of three periods.

The Ducks took a 10-point lead when Paopao scored the first two baskets in the fourth quarter. Schwartz then followed with a 3-pointer, two layups and a layup. Darcy Rees’ layup ended a 13-2 run that saw the Huskies lead 52-51 with just 4:39 remaining. Oregon took the lead again after Paopao’s jumper, and a layup following a Phillipina Kyei turnover.

Daniels hit a jumper that pulled Washington within 57 to 54 with 1:07 remaining. Schwartz missed an important 3-pointer with 51 second left. Hanson made the save by hitting from beyond the arc for Oregon.

Washington came into the game averaging 10.9 more rebounds than their opponents — second in the conference and ninth nationally. The battle of the boards was won by the Ducks, 40 to 31. By one, Kyei failed to post double-digit rebounds in Oregon’s nine consecutive games.
