Rep. James Comer (Republican from Kentucky), is the new Chair of the House Oversight Committee. If it is determined that he has broken campaign finance laws, then he will be expelled from Congress.

Comer stated that “I haven’t even introduced myself” to him, because it was “pretty deplorable the lies he told,” Comer said during CNN’s “State of the Union”. “But at end of the day it’s not my job or that of any other member in Congress to decide if he could be fired for lying. If he violates campaign finance laws, he will be expelled from Congress.

When Comer was pressed on the subject, he made the comment .

After winning his election in November Santos admitted that he had fabricated key aspects of his biography. This included his education and claims to have worked on Wall Street. Santos is also accused of lying about seemingly endless other life events such as his Jewish heritage, relationships, and the death of his mother.

The most shocking revelation is if Santos is found guilty of violating campaign finance laws. Other outlets have also discovered these items It appears that it was meant for Santos’ own use, or in violation of regulations. It is also unclear how Santos amassed enough wealth to be considered wealthy. In 2020, he reported earning a salary of $55,000.

To determine if Santos was a victim of any crime, we are investigating.

Santos has refused to resign and denies any criminal wrongdoing.

He is a bad guy. This is something that — it’s really bad. He’s not the first politician, unfortunately, to make it Congress, to lie,” Comer said Sunday.

“He’s going to be under strict ethics investigations, not necessarily for lying, but for his campaign finance potential violations,” he continued. “So I think that Santos is being examined thoroughly. It is his decision to resign or not; it is not mine. But certainly I don’t approve of how he made his way to Congress.”

A two-thirds majority in the House is required to expel a member. However, this power has been rarely used in modern history. It’s more common for lawmakers to resign when facing such widespread condemnation. He’s a bad man. This is something that — it’s really bad. He’s not the first politician, unfortunately, to make it Congress, to lie,” Comer said Sunday.

The House Republican leaders appear to be content to wait for now.

“The voters of his district have elected him. He is seated. He is part of the Republican conference,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy . “He will be held accountable, exactly as anybody else in his body would be,” McCarthy added.

“It will play itself out,” House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik .
