This report covers the air transport industry as well as aviation ground-handling. South Africa.

It contains detailed information about the sector’s size, state, flight, passenger, and cargo volumes, performance of noteworthy players, corporate actions, and developments.

Two years ago, the pandemic brought the industry of passenger and cargo air transport to its knees. Although it is making progress, its recovery has been hampered due to high ticket prices and the collapse of airlines, which has reduced the industry’s capacity and soaring fuel costs.

You will find profiles for 44 companies. These include state-owned SAA and Air Traffic and Navigation Services. International airlines such Qantas and Singapore Airlines. African airlines such Ethiopian Airlines. Ground handling companies such as NAS Colossal Aviation Services and Swissport South Africa. Cargo-handling companies like Menzies Aviation and Bidair Cargo.

Air transport has seen a significant shift in the wake of the bankruptcy of airlines like SAA, Comair, and SA Express as well the groundings of low-cost carriers. FlySafair and CemAir have consolidated their positions. Private business jet airlines are also experiencing growth, but air cargo airlines have been able to recover faster than passenger airlines.

Reduced Seats

The industry’s size was reduced by the suspension of flights by different airlines. SAA’s flights have been resumed with eight aircraft, compared to 28 in 2019 and only three domestic routes. Comair suspended its operations in May 2022 British Airways aircraft and Kulula aircraft were also grounded. Although FlySafair has expanded its fleets, CemAir is still a smaller industry than it was at beginning of 2019.

Competition

Many commentators believe South African passenger transport is moving into a new era of equal playing field after decades in which state-owned airlines were in a special position. Many of the collapsed airlines blame state-owned airlines’ privileged position for their problems. The industry is small, so there are secondary routes on which carriers enjoy a monopoly.
