Last week, a Massachusetts woman was killed while on vacation in Mexico.

Leah Pearse (20-year-old Nursing Student at Simmons University) died January 6, shortly after returning to her Airbnb in Cancun from a day on the beach.

According to obituaryPearse tried to climb onto the balcony to gain entry, but the keys to her room were locked in the apartment on the third floor.

Pearse, a Newburyport, Massachusetts native, was pursuing a 5-year Master of Nursing at Simmons University. She was a certified nursing assistant at Mass General Hospital.

According to her obituary, Leah wanted a place to express her love for others and her desire to help others.

In a statement Simmons University President Lynn Perry Wooten CBS News said that Pearse’s funeral broke the heart of campus.

Leah is known for her kindness, compassion, and senses of humor. Wooten explained that her lifelong goal was becoming a nurse. She was an exceptional student in the five-year accelerated Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree programs in nursing. We extend our deepest condolences to Leah and her family and friends as well as all those affected by this tragedy. Both students and employees have access to support and counselling.

According to the obituary Pearse was a hard worker but found joy in his work.

According to the obituary, “Leah had a wonderful time in college and made connections with everyone she met.” Leah was an open-minded person, who shared everything with everyone she met. People instantly felt that they had met her and they were able to feel a connection with her. They also loved the ease and joy she brought to every space they entered.

Pearse graduated 2020 from Haverhill’s Classical Academy High School and moved to Boston immediately after graduating. Haverhill is located about an hour north Boston.
