Let’s take a closer look into the Steelers red-zone problems

On the podcast, a former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker brought up an interesting topic Arthur Moats. Moats was questioned about the Steelers’ red zone performance this season. And as he always does, Moats did a great job of breaking down why teams struggle in the red zone and that this isn’t just a struggle for Pittsburgh.

I was struck by how different the Steelers are from the rest of the league. Here’s the result the numbers tell us. Pittsburgh is currently 21st among the league’s red zone scoring (touchdowns and only).

Pittsburgh scores touchdowns in red zone 52.08% of the times during the season. Compare this to the Philadelphia Eagles at 72.22% and the New England Patriots at 41.46 percent.

It’s important to keep in mind, in the first half of the season, the Steelers offense was absolutely dreadful. The Steelers are currently 7th in the league with a winning streak of three games. They scored touchdowns 71.43% of the time.

Moats pointed out that the condensed field makes it difficult for teams to score touchdowns. It creates smaller windows for Kenny Pickett, who has to make throws in the pocket. The margin for error is also very small. Matt Canada, the offensive coordinator, needs to make a living and plan plays that use Pickett moving around in the pocket. Also, using tight end Pat Freiermuth to open up those windows.
