The rookie PGA Tour player went 7 under in the first six holes. This included back-to-back eagles from The American Express.

It’s hard to have a much better start to a round than Davis Thompson did Thursday during his first round of The American Express at La Quinta Country Club.

Thompson, a 23 year-old PGA Tour rookie was 7 under at six holes. This included a stretch that saw Thompson shoot 6 under in four holes. It also featured consecutive eagles, on the par-5 5th and par-5 6th.

Birdie. Par. Birdie. Eagle. Eagle. Birdie. That’s a lot of circles on the card to begin the day.

Thompson was the first player to shoot 7 under his first six holes since Robert Streb, 2021 CJ Cup. He’s also the first player with consecutive eagles in a round since Shane Lowry at the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Thompson finished the nine-hole with an 8-under 28.

He has been able to make five cuts in six starts and was T-9 at this year’s Fortinet Championship. His hot start put him in front of the pack early in La Quinta (California).

Four golfers had three eagles in one round last season: Shane Lowry, Open Championship; Trey Mullinax, AT&T Byron Nelson; Stephan Jaeger, Mexico Open at Vidanta; Carlos Ortiz, WM Phoenix Open.
