Titans hire Ran Carthon, 49ers’ 14th general manager

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans Ran Carthon, San Francisco director of player personnel, was hired as the general manager.

The Titans announced Wednesday morning the hiring of Carthon, ending a lengthy search that had formally begun Jan. 12. Carthon will serve as the franchise’s minority GM. His introduction is tentatively planned for Friday at a news conference.

Amy Adams Strunk (controlling owner) was responsible for the selection committee, which interviewed seven candidates. She stated that they were thrilled to add Carthon due to his varied experience as a player and scout executive.

“I was impressed with his natural leadership qualities and his ability to connect with people,” Strunk said. Their roster in San Francisco stands out because talent evaluation is a crucial part of their role. He played an important role there constructing one of our league’s best teams.”

Carthon will become the sixth minority among the eight GMs who have been hired by the NFL. The NFL has had two programs since May to encourage more minority candidates for front-office jobs. Carthon, who turns 42 in February 2010, attended the first session last May.

Carthon and coach Kyle Shanahan joined San Francisco in 2017, along with general manager John Lynch. Since then, the 49ers have been to three playoffs. They won two division titles and were crowned NFC champions. Sixteen Pro Bowl picks were made by the 49ers in 2021, and seven this season.

After securing the No. 2 seed, the 49ers will play Dallas in Sunday’s NFC divisional round. 2 seed.

Carthon was San Francisco’s first director of professional personnel. He was then promoted to his current role in 2021. He was responsible for evaluating top college prospects and assessing potential free agents to help the team’s target group.

Carthon also interviewed last season for general manager positions with Chicago and New York Giants. Between 2012 and 2016, Carthon worked for the Rams as director of professional personnel. He began his career as a pro scout at Atlanta from 2008 through 2011.

He interviewed with the Titans last Friday. Strunk was the head of the search committee for Jon Robinson, who was fired Dec. 6, in his seventh season. Titans’ seven-game skid en route to a 7-10 finish.

Carthon was a Florida running back and was part the 2000 Southeastern Conference Championship winning team. In 2004, he was an undrafted agent and spent three years in the NFL. He began with Indianapolis and played in nine games between 2005-2006.

Carthon was born in Osceola in Arkansas. He earned his bachelor’s in sociology from Florida in 2008, after his playing career. In 2013, he participated in the NFL Career Development Symposium at Wharton School of Business. He was also a participant in the 2018 San Francisco Career Development Symposium.

Maurice, his dad, played in the NFL, and was a coach with seven NFL teams.
