Toronto Zoo’s attempt to name a cockroach for an ex has drawn backlash.

Valentine’s Day is near! Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy A new campaign has been launched by the company, “Name-a-roach”.

The zoo will let you name a cockroach after someone you know for $25

“Roses are red, violets are blue… Is there someone in your life that’s bugging you? Give them goosebumps this Valentine’s Day by naming a cockroach in their honour,” the wildlife conservancy’s webpage reads.

Donors will receive a digital gift certificate that includes the name of the Roach, a full charitable tax receipt and a shareable digital image.

Toronto Zoo clarified that names and inappropriate language will not appear on the digital certificate. They also stated that hate speech and profanity will not be tolerated.

“The Toronto Zoo and the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy respect all creatures – big and small. According to the organization, Cockroaches have a vital ecological role in their rainforest habitats by helping to decompose tree litter and animal waste and providing food for many animals.”

Criticism of the cockroach method: “This is a sick idea.”

Although the idea resonated with many online, inspiring laughter and a few ideas to ‘target’ cockroaches. Many were also offended by the cheap donations made by the Zoo, calling it a way of dehumanizing, bullying others.
